Help.....head gasket ? Sun, 01 June 2003 01:23 Go to next message
Hey all

i took the cap of the radiator on my Corona (2.0L 2SC engine)

and theres milk....
so Oil's mixing with coolant

but i checked the dipstick very quickly.....and that seemed fine.....

so is it possible that Oil's getting in the coolant yet theres no coolant getting into the oil ?

If so how ?

Thanx
Mani

I dont know much about the internal pipework of engines, but if the oil at one point is constantly at a higher pressure than the water, you'd get oil in the water but no water in the oil.

OR if oil gets to higher pressure than water (which I'm pretty sure it does) and there's only a TINY gap, then only the oil has enough pressure to be forced through

Yup, it's quite possible to have oil in the coolant and not the reverse, or vice-versa. It depends where the headgasket has blown and how bad it is.

hmm....that actually makes sense

Now oil in the coolant is much less dangerous than coolant in oil right ?

So how do i go about reducing pressure in my cooling system so as to not root the engine

as im doing a conversion as long as the engine runs for about a year i dont care what condition its in

Would having nothing in the reservoir and sucking a TINY bit out from the radiator be an option ? ....as when the system tries to go under high pressure.....it compresses air....hence less pressure ???

Thanx
Mani

the solution is not to reduce the pressure i your cooling system. if you try that (through the methods you mentioned above) you'll find that your engine will be running hot.

how long does it have to last before a conversion? you'd be amazed how long a car can limp along with a busted head gasket. but what will happen is one day you'll probably fry a cylinder, and then you'll have to do something about it

Well when i took the radiator cap off last night.....there was already a bit of a gap from the top of the radiator....and obviously nothing in the reservoir....and the car has been running fine...so could it be an option ???

and i topped it up today ....and after hearing what u guys said about pressure i thought "uh oh" shouldnt have topped it up

the car has to last about a year like i said

i also have a postie that i can get to and work from
so at the most ill be using my corona 3 days a week MAYBE 4 days a week for about a year

Thanx Heaps

For the overwhelming expense of the head gasket or a top set, would it not be safer just to change it?

It is unlikely that the water pressure will ever exceed the oil pressure. The cooling system pressure is set by the radiator cap at usually 8, 13 or 15 PSI dependent on the cap. Oil pressure is lowest at idle and should be at least 8 PSI, and unless the engine is boiling the pressure in the cooling system should also be below this. As soon as the engine rises above idle oil pressure generally jumps to 15 PSI plus depending on the condition of the engine. Not saying that this is justification for not changing the head gasket. Consider it would cost under 100 bucks to change prolly around $50-60 (with your experience - do it at work), and how much it would cost for a tow if it decides to die anyway (about 50 to 80 bucks)!?!?!?!?

Cheers.

yeah i just realised its pointless redicing water in the radiator as the pressure will rise and rise untill the 13 PSI is met anyway

hmm...yeah ill find out if the gasket is blown and ill prob replace it if it is

Thanx

Regardless of what ppl will say Chemiweld is a quick fix, but a great one. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

If it does, your laughing cause it cost you bugger all.
If it doesn't, then it doesn't..

If Leak in the gasket is small enough, you might be ok. Make sure you follow the instructions exactly.

It's worth a try buddy

oh heck yeah doing the head gasket would be a piece of piss but

a) time consuming
b)im holding a bet against someone that with my careful driving i can go a year driving like this

if i properly warm up the car b4 driving and take it easy i reckon i should be sweet

which also brings up the issue of wtf is with the cold idling set at 2000 RPM !!!
pissing me off hard and cant be good for anything !!!

i need to find the cold idle screw
