Finally after 2 months of researching and getting stuffed around I bought my new clutch Smile

This one should hopefully hold the torque of the new setup as the current clutch was slipping in 4th and 5th when comming onto decent boost.

I had the flywheel, the larger 5MGE 236mm machined up and after alot of measurements came up with a combination. It took two freakin hours at the clutch place checking clearances and free play distances.

Cost me $280 all up incl GST. That's for flywheel machining and the pressure plate($240).

John from *Western Clutches* spent alot of time demonstrating the different clamping forces of the pressure plates and setting it up on my flywheel with 15thou shims. He knows his stuff!

If you can't see the photo's below they are also up on my website in the Parts and the Photo page.

So you stuck with your old clutch plate ??

I will be surprised if this will be enough. I too have been researching clutch combo's and there is no way a stock 1j clutch plate can do the job even with an upgraded pressure plate.

I loved my full face clutch - was great to slip off the line giving me great launches. But it is dead and I dont wanna ever have to replace it again !!

ATM I am looking at a 3800Lb preesure plate with 5 puck sprung button Clutch plate.

What is the pressure rating of your new PP ?

Yep I stuck with another clutch plate, not my old one. This one has 28 rivets instead of 12 like others which makes it more rigid. I hate the on/off action with button/puck clutches, they kill your uni's, diff pinions and your gearbox.

I want the best drivability possible. I don't have a clamping force rating on this pressure plate but out at Western clutch's on testing rig, this is what it measured below. It's not a direct clamping pressure but a reference.

580- Extreme pressure plate
480- Extra heavy duty(was slipping on high boost in 4th& 5th)
475- My old 225mm flywheel pressure plate never slipped @ 300rwhp
275- Standard pressure plate

I don't see this one slipping with 450hp at the crank but if it does there is a 12 puck Xtreme plate which will fit straight in but costs $340. It wont have the harshness of typical button clutches and with the pressure plate i've got will hold over 750hp but I wont have to go there i'm sure.

Anyone know what the standard pressure plate's clamping force is?
For the 7mge, 5mge, 5me.

Cool

I dont likethe action of button clutches either but I am told that thisis the only way i can get one to hold up under the conditions I specified.

I am going to do a big single turbo later this year so the upgrade must be up to scratch for that, though I am not expecting more than 400 rwhp.

I just doent want it to slip EVER , no matter what I do to it.
The weight issue maybe a large factor when comparing our setups, Id hope I will make similar power but I also probably weigh 300kg more which must comeinto the equation at some stage.

Your Price is good though, Id be happy with that.

standard clamping is about 1100 lbs from memory

could be very wring though.

appaenty my new pressure plate is ~2100lbs (could be a BS figure)

FWIW my pressure plate is meant to have 50% more clamp than a stock 2JZ-GE pressure plate, but I'm not sure how much that is. It was still slipping under boost with a full-flace clutch plate, so I bought a 5-puck sprung centre and installed that on the weekend. I was pleased to find it's no harder to drive than the full-face clutch, and it holds the power no worries at all! The Supra is a real wheelspin machine now. Smile

Hey SUPRAGTE, I wouldn't mind getting some more info from you in regards to this setup.

I'm building a RWD 3s-gte and have heard a rumor that the 7m-gte clutches fit. Been hunting around for something to handle around 400 HP @ fly. Would really like not to have to go to brass button if it can be avoided, but so far everyone has said it'll need to be brass button.

Cheers
Joel

Paul, Love the way you do your research before getting something, and the way you know what you want out of your car so can get the parts to suit. Looks like a great clutch, hope it doesn't slip with all your power!

Matt, Have you considered twin plate clutches? I realise they are expensive, but they can sometimes be found on half-cuts where people don't need them. I'm with Paul with not liking the juttering force of sprung clutches.

Norbie, Is the launch better now? How about the axle squat? Is it more pronounced with a sharper clutch?

I just put a 4 puck button clutch in mine, was thinging the same as your all thinking that I don't want the on/off action of a button clutch. But it was cheap and I only really needed the pressure plate anyway.

To my surprise its not too bad to drive at all. They still slip its just you have less take-up.

I havn't done any launches yet, only a bit of general driving around today, but im pretty happy.

Just thought id share how mine is Smile

I was under the impression that the brass button clutches aren't the on/off ones, its the sprung brass button clutches.

what does it mean by sprung brass button?
Does it mean sprung center as apposed to solid?

Mine is a sprung center, don't know about spung brass button...?

I thought the sprung ones were the better, i.e. nice to use, out of the two!?

Sprung centres are definitely much smoother and easier to drive than non-sprung. The springs absorb some of the shock when the clutch engages.

Pete: I haven't really been able to launch the car hard because I have bad axle tramp. I blame that on the rooted shocks. Sad

TurboRA28: you won't need a brass button clutch to handle that sort of power. I've driven a car with a brass clutch and it was fairly difficult to live with; certainly nowhere near as easy to drive as mine.

Re: My new Xtreme clutch! Mon, 02 June 2003 06:52 Go to previous messageGo to next message
From what I've learnt there are at least over 15 different types of clutch plates. I got alot of info from a guy in Artarmon who used to work in the clutch industry and the rest came from Western Clutches who are very cheap and have top notch clutches.

They do clutches for 8second rotors so they know their shit. Jimmy who also out there has 600HP GSR Lancer and he is currently machining up his own twin plate clutch out of two button clutches. I've made things up myself but would never have considered making my "own" twin plate clutch! Shocked

Below is the list of clutch from easiest to drive to most horsepower/torque handling. There's probably some i've left out too some guys will pick up on, and hopefully tell us.

1.Full round face clutch with floating sprung centre.
Where the disk of clutch material is attached to the metal
plate with special rivets so there is movement helping reduce
shudder and grabbing combined with the sprung centre. Pretty
much a factory clutch.

2. Same as above but they drill the rivets out, remove the
clutch material and re-attach it with glue it to the central
disk. This is a grippier clutch with slightly less driver
friendliness, but still great.

3. Full round face clutch without sprung centre but with
floating clutch material.

4. Full round face clutch without sprung centre and without
floating clutch material.

5. New type from Exedy(Probably my fav) has a full round disk
with multiple pads(like 12), is sprung centre and also has
two metal disks back to back. So you get almost max gripping
with the pads but not full harshness, you get the sprung
centre to ease bite and the two disks back to back to ease
bite again. This is what i would have gone for for a big hp
application but i don't want any more power now.

6. Button/paddle clutch with sprung centre

7. Button/paddle clutch without sprung centre
Quite alot of bite and harsh on uni's and diff's.
Everyone's seen Yogi reversing from O to 30km/h with the
release of the clutch.

8. Twin plate clutch

9. Triple plate cltuch

You can go either way or compromise.

Either,
Go up in heavier pressure plates to hold a full faced clutch and keep drivability and driveline longevity, but with a heavier peddle as the only downside. Your uni's, diff, etc will love u.
*That's my angle on it*

Or
Keep same pressure plate and go a paddle clutch that will grab but be harsh on your uni's,diff etc but easy on your left leg.

That's without going to a mutli-thousand dollar multiplate clutch like in Pete's Supra. They're like starting price of $2k!

Pressure plates are usually cheaper that high performance clutch plates so its also cheaper to the the route I am.

TurboRA28, i'd give Western Clutches a call and have a chat, they're very help full. The pressure plate could very well be suited to your 3SGTE flywheel too but I don't know dimensions etc of the 3SGTE one.

I used to run a 5 paddle ceramic clutch behind my old 5ME turbo (270rwkw). Needless to say it made my left leg sore and the car would shudder as it was engaged (reversing up driveways while slipping the clutch a bit was right out-it was on or off). Certainly did the business though!
