sump leek (1ggte) Mon, 02 June 2003 02:50 Go to next message
hey guys
my sump is still leeking Sad, ive tried to fix the problem a few times its leeking from where it joins to the block, if i try to do up the little bolts they just keep snaping, feels like they should be alot tighter!.
I used "silastic" between the sandwich plate and the sump, ( i didint use much so that could be the problem) also could it be firing it out above the sandwich plate?

ive had enough! its driving me around the bend! whats the best way to stop it?
this is what i was thinking
*buy stronger bolts so when i tighten them they dont snap!

cheers

Craig

if there is no gasket (silicone cork or whatever) between the sump and the block it will still leak no matter how tight the bolts are, so how tight you do the bolts is irrelevant.

so either get a gasket from toyota or do a proper job with the silicone.

I just took the sump off my 1GGTEU, it had a nice sealing layer of silicon between the block and the baffle, and another layer between the baffle and the sump. Make sure it goes around the whole way and seals off properly before you tighten all the bolts.

Don't go overboard, but don't be afraid to put a little bit more to make sure you have it done right. After the pain in the arse it was to remove the silastic to get my sump off, I realise this is the way Toyota thought too Razz

copper sandwitch plate?

do u mean u have a copper sandwitch plate going round the length of the block skirt?

ive seen a few 1G-GTE blocks and cannot recall ever seeing a copper sandwitchplate between the sump and block, how thick is it?

that sandwitch plate is weird... anyone else have a 1G with a sandwitch plate on the sump?

anyways im not sure how to explain how much silicon to use, i suppose use more that what u did before, what i did was run the stuff along the middle of the block skirt then when i got to a bolt hole i made a circle around it so the hole wouldnt get gunked up with silicone.

try to get the sump on in one go so the silicone only has to bubble/shape once, putting the sump on and then taking it off compromises the sealing shape by having already pushed alot of the silicone out to the sides and can cause leaks again.

hope this helps

In mine I had to remove silicon from between the oil pan and the baffle, and the baffle and the block.

I'm assuming this is what you are talking about:

There should definetly be some silicon between both layers. I recommend if you are sure that its leaking from the sump, take it apart carefully and put it back together, making sure its done right.

Craig

Agree that you may not have used enough silicon when you put it back together.

have been meaning to get back to you for some time. I assume that you no longer need the sump that I offered. One of the club member here in canberra was after a mid sump and I promised to check to see if you were still wanting the one that i had??

From what I remember, the mid-rear sump has that gasket thing. The front sump doesn't...

Might explain the confusion Rob.

But trusting my memory is not a good idea.... Smile
