4k hot up.

Hi all
my friend has asked me for advice about doing up his corolla sedan but keeping it to an engine that can be bolted in.
it is a 1980 corolla sedan (with round lights at the front).
he said he has a budget of arround 600 but i think he will spend more if necessary.
currently it has a 4k motor that has traveled 110k origional kms (first owner was his grandma). so i thought it would be wise to use as much of this engine as possable.
i dont know much about these motors but this is what i thought:
3k bigport head on 4k block (bigger ports and higher compression?)
head reconditioned with a port and polish
webber 32/36 carbie
stock bottom end with a mild cam and shortened lifters if necessary
extractors and a 2 inch exhaust.
any susgestions?
thanks in advance
Daniel.

stay less than 400thou lift on the cam and i think stock springs will be ok. and prolly won't need to machine the rocker towers..
machine the lifters? why'd you need that? am curious
2" is good for high revs/cam, but a bit smaller is fine if it's mild...
other than that, sounds like a good plan...
oh, get a double row timing chain from a 3K, if the 4K doesn't have one...
and exhaust porting can make a lot of difference... but ppl chrage way too much...
also unshrouding the valves in the combustion chamber helps a lot...
there's also a couple of threads on this subject before

i thought u would have to change the pushrods length if the cam profile created too much lift. if that makes no sense that is because i have never pulled apart a pushrod engine so i have no idea

another question are all the 3k heads the same valve/portsize or are there smaller more restrictive heads also that came out later due to emissions etc. if so what headblock numbers would be the best to look out for?
thanks again

nup, if you get it reground, then the lifters sit lower in the bore, and you can adjust the rockers a bit.
if you have high lift (like 1mm or more over stock, which is 8.5-9mm cam lift) then if you get the rocker towers machined by the same amount as the increase in cam lift, then it all works out sweet.
i have 11mm cam lift and shaved the rocker towers 2.5mm and it has quieter valves than stock
almost all K type heads (K,3K,4K) have the same size exhaust ports and most have 27mm diameter intake ports.
there are some more restrictive ones which have 25mm ports, but you'll really want to stay clear of these...
there are also "big ports" which have 30-31mm intake ports. you can tell these by the welch plug at the back of the head.
K bigports (from 1100) are 22010 and 3K bigports (from 1200) are 24010.
anything else??
where are you located?
