Does anyone know how to remove sound deading from a cars floor pan?
I was thinking a heat gun and some elbow grease. But I would like to know if some one has done it before and how it was done...
Any ideas ppl?

Heat gun is the best.
Heat it in areas of about a suare foot at a time and it will lift off easily with a paint scraper.

Lots and lots of elbow grease
I have seen a someone working on a holden floorpan and they gave up with the heat gun and ended up using an acetylyne torch to heat it (smelly and lots of fumes) but a lot quicker to heat.
Grab a decent paint scraper too - go to a decent hardware or paint store and get one that is a bit firm, nothing worse than working with a flimsy scraper that elcheapo places sell
Good luck!

just out of interest - did you somehow replace the stuff you pulled out or put some new stuff in? If you put new stuff what did you use? (and where did you get it?)

I took it out to reduce weight in race car. I couldn't stand driving street car without it as it resonates etc without it.

the sound deadening in my ae86 came up quite easily on the floor areas but was a bit harder under the rear seat. i used a screwdriver to prise it up and it chips away ok without any heat. a note of warning though DO NOT PULL UP THE DEADENING FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT FLOOR since the exhaust flows along this side passengers tend to get a bit annoyed when they have to hold their feet off the floor on long trips!!! removal will save a bit of weight, but not that much, i did it so i could paint the floor

The only time I've done this we tried two methods.
First we tried the traditional heat gun and scraper. This took a looooonnngg time to do a small area and got us rather discouraged. Seeing as how we were Chemistry and Engineering students at the time we had a look at what we were trying to do and came up with a different plan of attack.
Second attempt. We went to the Chem labs at uni and got 2 eski's full of dry ice then put this over the sound deadener. Once the dry ice had sublimated we hit the floor with a hammer a couple of times and then picked up all of the frozen tar with tongs. This was my favourite method because it had close to zero effort involved and also made super chilly beverages available while waiting for the dry ice to do it's thing.

Petrol is usually good for clean up after scrapping, just melts the underseal.
