I was thinking the same thing the other day.

Ive heard that it burns your cat out and damages the oxygen sensor.

I will prob run a mixture of petrol/avgas if it wont hurt the old girl.

fwiw...

yup, avgas kills sensors, since the environmental concerns for planes is overridden by the need to keep them in the air Wink

also something most ppl seem to forget is that avgas is not designed for high speed motors.. yes it has higher octane, but it also has a slower burn rate, designed for plane engines which do lower revs than your car will.. so at high engine speeds, you will need much more advance to get a complete burn or you are not getting as much out of it as you would with normal 98 octane...

so yes, higher octane, and cos you can/need to run more advance it is thought to be better, but may not be the best way to get that 1% extra...

anyhoo, my 2c...

buy yourself a 20Lt drum of toluene its not lead based and will boost your octane (got rid of the pining on my car). most speed shops should sell it costs about $40-$60 for the drum, use about a 20% mix with optimax.

i guy was telling me once that to run avgas you need:extractors,a dummy cat or a flange made up to take the cats position on the exhaust and to advance the timing so i would go a mixture just what twinky said cause the effects could be awful... does it damage valves anyone?
cheers

Avgas contains LOTS of lead (way more than super used to), so it will kill your O2 sensor in no time.

Note that you will see minimal gains running Avgas on a street engine if it's not tuned to to run on Avgas. You can advance the timing which will help a bit, but the gains will be too small to make it worth the effort. You really need high-compression pistons and a re-mapped ECU to fully take advantage of all that octane.

Yup Norbie hit the nail on the head, Running Avgas on an unleaded engine without appropriate modifications is both illegal and very damaging to your engine.

On the other hand, if you have an old leaded type car, filler up and git it a bit more advance on the dissy and whooshka. Well a little better anyway.

Just in case you are unaware. Avagas is now outlawed for sale for non aviation use except for some Catagories of race vehicles. To purchase now for racing you must have a CAMS fuel log book. Very heavy fines for both supplier and purchaser.

i was told that ze's can handle the ron because of the fuel they use in japan is 108 ron ?? so the engines r already set up to that hi octane iam sure a couple of squirts down the trax wont hurt the engine?

I used to run avgas for track work in my previous AW11 4agze Sprinter. No cat but with O2 sensor, never had a problem with the O2 sensor, but I seem to remember that there is about a 100 hour limit and then the sensor will die.

Avgas also tends to destroy platinum plugs as well.

I noticed a slight improvement in low rev response and mid range torque with avgas.

Now that 98 RON ULP is available there's really no point in running avgas, if you want more octane add some octane booster like 104+ to 98 RON ULP and that should be more than you ever need.

Toluene is also evil, evil stuff. Do everything you can to avoid direct contact with it and try not to breathe the fumes.

Toluene yup pretty bad Methelethalkeytone (MEK) is worse got banned in the states i think. I use to have my hands in it every day for about 4 years i think they are both neural toxins.
About the only difference you will notice on Avgas is that the car runs hotter and idles smoother.
There are two main types of AVGAS:
100LL which is blue, 100 octane and 0.1 parts per million lead (i think)
100 which is green, 100 octane and more lead than blue
PS dont get caught using it big big fines its pretty easy to tell if people use it because you can smell it in the exhaust.
