2TGEU in TA22: Do i need a surg tank? Tue, 03 June 2003 04:48 Go to next message
Hey guy just wanted to know what other people have found from having a 2tgeu in there TA22. It's standard with EFI.
If people have needed surg tank what size have they used and what sort of pumps?
I do have a VL pump, will this do the job?

the VL pump will do the job... and probably a 2-3L surge tank will be fine.
Talk to Pumpkin on the forums as he has a 2T-GEU in his TA23 and is using the same pump.

Always use a surge tank. EFI pumps are not designed to suck directly from a tank. I use about a 1 litre surge tank and could send you a pic of a set-up in a TA23 if you're interested. Send me an email about it.

If you have a later model TA22 with the upright fuel tank, a surge tank isn't necessary. I have an external VL pump in my RA23 and it's been working like that for several years with no problems. The trick is to mount the pump lower than the tank (eg in the little compartment in the boot for the jack) so it's not trying to "lift" the fuel. I have never experienced fuel surge, even with spirited driving with a low fuel level.

If you have the floor-mounted tank, you will need a surge tank though. Either that or have a swirl pot made up and use an in-tank pump.

Norbie,

Even with a pump below the main tank it really is advisable to use a surge tank. Yeah sure it will work without it to limited degree of success.

And a High pressure pump should always be below the fuel tank/surge pump that is feeding it.

I've heard this before, but no-one has been able to tell me why! Like I said, I've been running this setup for years with plenty of success. Smile

I would just use a swirl pot. No smell of fumes in the boot no fuel lines in the boot and it takes up no space (virtually)

isnt a swirl pot just a surge tank but the fuel swirls around inside it?

No. A swirl pot sits inside the tank, and is used in conjunction with in-tank pumps. It's essentially just baffling designed to keep the fuel pickup submerged at all times.

Norbie,

Where abouts is the fuel pickup located in your RA23, does it come out the top of the tank ??

Yes it does. The fuel line, fuel return line and breather line all come out the top of the tank.
