question about 4AGE, 4AGZE, 4AGE20V conrods Wed, 04 June 2003 01:37 Go to next message
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can answer my question about the difference between the 3 rods (if there is any difference).
Are they interchangable? Which of the 3 have the strongest rods?
Im not really concerned about pistons at this stage.
Im not all that technical about engine internals but what is the gudgeon pin? is that the pin to hold the piston to the conrod?
I have looked around phil bradshaws website phil bradsaw and the diameter is the same for the 3 engines (20mm for all except the blue top engine- 18mm).

If anyone can help out, that'll be great, thanks.
Andrew

There's a huge article about the rods on www.club4ag.com

thanks for pointing out club 4ag, i totally forgot about that site...
the article is very long, i've tried to read much of it but im still baffled....

i'll explain my situation:
i may get my hands on some aftermarket pistons but no rods so i was thinking of swapping them with 20v rods. the thing is, my engine is a bluetop and from my readings, the bluetop rods are lighter, thinner (basically weaker than the later version rods from the 4A series engine) and the pin diameter is also different.

has anybody had any experience with swapping out conrods before?

if your 4age is the blue top, then it's crank will only fit the 40mm rods which have the 18mm gudgeons..
so you would need the crank out of a ze (or the smallport 16v 20valve by memory has the same crank sizes) to be able to use the stronger 4agze 42mm 20mm gudeon rods.
if you have a red and black top 4age (t-vis, bigport) it has a 7 rib block and same crank and rod sizes as a 4agze, just the pistons are different.

yes the gudgeon pins are what hold the piston to the rod.

really a 4agze would be a better starting platform for you to do a turbo conversion than getting all the parts for your 4age.

forced induction use the GZE rods
N/A use the 20V Rods

I could go into a discussion as to why but I cant be bothered .. just trust me that this is the way you should go Smile
