Says 82 on all that i have removed. Get a 72 degree one 1J's run heaps better when you keep them a bit cooler.

I always thought the 1js were supposed to run at around 90 degrees. I'm not basing this on any sort of fact.. just heresay

The only reason for high thermostats is for emissions. Anything above 70 degrees is warm enough to inhibit engine wear.

Thats interesting.
I was going to mention it would make the stock ECU run quite rich wouldn't it.

Sure would, it would never get out of the end of the warm up map.
You have to remember also the hotter the engine runs the more power it will produce. It's an internal combustion engine, if you run it cold it won't run effectivly and effciently.

Saying that, leave the stock thermostat and set your thermo fan at around 88-90. Are you running the normal engine fan as well?

I'm running a 14" slimline electric fan only on a custom 2row aluminium radiator.

how much did that radiator set you back? I'm turning into a bit of a weight nazi, so if I can save weight relatively cheaply by grabbing a new radiator, I'd love to.

It uses a K&J dimpled 2x29mm thick core, 520x360mm.
It's $1000NZ, I also got a price from PWR over in OZ and it was $700AU.

pete im sorry but 1j thermostats are 92 degrees .OR SHOULD be im not sure what stampde on them but all teh 1j ive ever seen with a temp gauge open around 92 .

running them below this is not making more power but less .
supra gte is DEAD right i now run the Cressida at 95-100 degrees and and mid range torque has proven on the dyno plus to be ...MUCH fatter .

hotter engines do run better

and yes runing them colder makes them run rich .hot engine cold air ...now your talkin

FWIW
Tested the thermostat on the weekend.
It started opening at 82 as it has stamped on it.
Was fully open by 92.

ok, to totally raise an old thread and generally piss everyone off - with stock thermostat, what on/off should I set my thermos to?

I'm thinking on 96, off 92?

anyone know the answer?

I have to set mine too. I would be thinking that what Draven said is correct but some confirmation would be good Smile

wow, this is from the dead.

I had a 92-88 thermo switch, but it was on a lot of the time with the stock thermostat.

I have put a TRD thermostat in (72d) and it is all sweet.
