i drive my dads 93 landcruiser regularly and its obviously a cool car for a P plater to b driving n e way. i grew up on a farm so naturally i have had a fair bit of driving experience (compared to your average P plater) and treat any car i drive like any other country boy would Very Happy.
the landcruiser has all the usuall 4wd stuff: snorkel, roo-bar, dual batteries, rainwater tank in the back, heavy duty 4wd tyres, pioneer head unit, kenwood speakers, tints Cool. im known by most of my mates as one of the craziest drivers around as i treat the top heavy 2960kg beast like its my mates ta22; throwing it into corners etc... for a 4wd it handles superbly well when sideways and has the ability to do nice smokey brake-on standstills without the car moving an inch. the diesel 4.2 might have something to do with that last bit.
Just wondering if n e one knows of similar cars ...
eg i know of a guy with a twin turbo 300zx conversion into a dual cab navara 4x2

hey quick -
2 words: be very careful! (okay - three then!)

just read your post and my stomach nearly turned - believe me, top heavy 4wd do not handle well sideways - they may to a point, but once past that point you will find yourself upside down very very quickly, especially if you have any speed .. I have seen not one, but two very new cruisers roll on the freeway - both times after making a minor swerve that a normal car would easily recover from..

having said that - a mate of mine had an old soft top short wheel base cruiser, with a 350 chev (injected - rather worked as well).. it hooted and was great fun off road, especially with 4wd diff ratio's! ..

I think these cars are hazardous enough on the road.
If they are involved in a crash thats pretty bad, the person that gets hit by this tank on wheels won't stand a chance. And as tuns of people keep telling me, p platers are bound to crash. So having a car like this just makes it a lot worse.
Just make sure that if u do use this car for ur p's u restrain urself when driving on the road.

4WD arent really meant to be driven in the same manner as normal passenger or sports cars. their sentre of gravity is too high for sudden shifts of weight. for your own health and more importantly the safety of others i think you should use the 4WD for 4WDing and not for tarmac rallys. 4WD in surburbia have a bad name already, lets not give country 4WD a negative stigma aswell.

damn - i didnt really think too hard about your driving style untill it clicked that you were doing all of this on the ROAD. i thought you were talking about sliding it around on the dirt.

dude - grow up, if i get nailed by some dickedhead attempting to powerslide a 2900kg 4wd with a roo bar on a suburban roundabout in the wet, im going to be a little pissed off

treating a 4x4 like a celica is bound to end in disaster..

they aint ment to be driven in the same manner, you put mass strain on everything, and ur bound to come unstuck, i 2 have seen both old and new 4x4 turned over just by taking corners a lil too hard... or by a sudden jerk/swerve.

on the other side... out in the bush... or a padock somewhere, 4x4 = lots and lots of fun!

driving thru the impossible! destroying anything in your way!! in true aussie style! lol

a mate of mine has a hilux surf. best fun out no where when its raining

Hey - Im a country Boy - but i dont drive a 2 tonne truck like a bloody idiot ..

I hope i dont come across you on country roads - or else your driving style in that heavy ass machine will end up making mine a statistic

if you want fun - throw the landy around in a paddock - at least if you smash it then you only hurt yourself

No No No

You remind me of a certain little twit who ran up the arse of my celica, claiming that he is "a really good driver", with "lots of experience" and also on his P's..... just after he had run into the back of me at 60k's.
Thank god that dilusional tool wasn't driving a 2.9 TONNE truck like you - else i would be stuck in a wheelchair for life and left with a mangled piece of what was once Toyota's finest.....

To you i say:

Grow up. Wake up. Act responsible. *expletive deleted*
Mad

I truly hope you kill yourself before you kill someone else. That just ISN'T COOL. Leave it to the offroads, what your car was made for.

<just another advocate for the special licencing for 4WD useage>

hey hold up a bit.....i was talkin about drivin around the country to start and also most times i am in a paddock but i didnt go claiming im the worlds biggest wank (aka good driver on P plates) i said ive had a bit of driving experience i didnt say i was top shit.

btw the car was crashed the other day. i pulled out in front of a hyundai excel that was speeding,.. didnt see him.....i was doin bout 8 kmh at the time of crash...he hit me hard enough to push the floor across and up and take out both doors...after locking up the brakes for 10-15 metres

i was only one in the car luckily as the passenger side was stuffed..usually my little sister sits there.

the reason i put the post in was about the navara twin turbo to see if anyone new of similar rides.

ps i only fuck around in the 4wd when im the only one in the car and im in a town POPULATION 3500 out near the airport where nobody else goes.

country boys drive monaro's and toranas and the occaisional commodore. Sad

sorry for all the people i seem to have upset but i wasnt thinking when i put in the post...it was late....i was tired didnt mean for it to come out like this

send us sum storys about wacky cars....351 softtop lancruiser etc

dont you just hate it when you get eaten alive in a thread Smile

at least we're honest, and you know when youve done something good, pepole will let you know about it Razz

the take home message is: be responsible, and dont for one second think that youre 'above' the risks of a mere mortal. shit happens, and it bites real hard when it does....

I'd have to agree.
Being a country girl I have seen many 4WD's come to an untimely end because of the "I'm better than everyone else" factor.
Simple fact is like everyone said.... just cause they are Big cars.. they sure as hell arn't safer... they are way to top heavy and tip way to easily, and yes unfortunately I know from personal experence. Embarassed

So just take care and drive safe no matter where you are...

And i'm sorry to hear about the car..... but like some have said, big cars kill - tread them with more respect than you would any other car.

A good friend of mine rolled his Land Rover and became a C5/6 quadriplegic. After a year or so of rehab, he now has the priviledge of having carers take care of his every bodily need for the rest of his life.

Beware.
