Alternator/charging problems on a 3T-GTE in TA22 celica Sun, 08 June 2003 01:21 Go to next message
Hi everybody,

I'm having some hassles at the moment that I cant figure out. I was wondering if someone might be able to help. I have a 1973 TA22 Celica with a 3T-GTE in it. 12mths ago I had the alternator rebuilt and the battery is a heavy duty one which I have relocated to the boot. When I start my car up I notice that the charge light is glowing very faintly, sometimes when I accelerate I notice the brightness of the charge light fluctuates (normally brightens on deceleration). Also, when I turn my headlights on it brightens as well although this also fluctuates in intensity. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?

Thanks for your help

Daniel

is yr alternator internal reg or external

if its external then it might be yr regulator

if its internal then yr alternator might be playing up

if its external id recommend putting an internal reg type on it
and removing the external regulator and then all u need is a battery wire and the charge light wire to yr alternator it looks much neater

yr car being that old would have had an external reg i think
so it depends when the conversion got done whether they fitted internal reg type alternator

It is an internal regulator. Originally the 2T-G was external but when we put the 3T-GTE in we converted it to internal regulator. I thought it might have been the alternator as well but that was rebuilt 12mths ago

one thing to check is make sure alternsator has a good earth to the block
get multimeter and check resistance
this sometimes happens on old engines

otherwise take alternator to a place to be spun up and checked
only takes few minutes

Very Happy i know exactly what's happening Smile
well, one of two thing sthat i had happen to me numerous times...
first thing is loose mounts or bad grounds.
second thing is that one of the wires from the stator coil to the diode pack had come loose from fatigue of the solder. if ya pull it apart and redo all the solder joints it will probably be ok.
basically if the light is coming on faintly it is usually a sign that one of the 3 coils in the alt isn't working.... it happens commonly with high rpm motors because of the aforementioned solder fatigue failures....
have you checked the voltage with a digital multi? i would get around 11.5-12V and the battery would stay vaguely charged....

ps, i have pics of when i last resoldered my alt if that would help ya???

it may not be as simple as resoldering the stator leads but a possibility.

Here is some more

Bad rectifier
Bad stator

I am an auto elec so i may be able to do something for you depending on where you are from?
