AE92 electrical gremlins Sun, 08 June 2003 13:39 Go to next message
Does anyone happen to know of a great place to start looking for electrical nasties on an AE92? This is a standard car, 4AFC, 3 speed auto (yick!). I know of a few common problems on some cars that can do funny things with the electrics (e.g. earth wire on headlight of R31 skyline), but not the AE92... The trouble is it will suddenly decide to stall as well as moving the temp gauge to the max position (no, it's not overheating, it's an electrical problem..). Can someone PLEASE save me from farting around for hours with a multimeter trying to look for crook earthing etc.?? Evil or Very Mad

I'm getting the same problem that you by the sound of it. Doing all the usual diagnostics etc and it seems to be related to some sort of thermostat issue. When idling, the temperature sometimes rises and falls like a thermo cutting in and out. Often stalls on idle which becomes first sign it will play up after driving OK. Tapping accelerator pedal makes the needle drop down and back up, driving brings needle nback to normal sometimes. I thought it might be the auto choke coil which is the only thing I can see with a wire hanging out of it which might get affected by the slightest tap on the accelerator peddal. Did you get to resolve your issue ?

on ae92 the temp gauge has an earth wire to it
if this earth aint hooked up it reads hi off the gauge

the earth wire (brown) runs thru the yellow plug which is below the stereo on left hand side

these wire run thru the firewall to the engine and earths on the block
and the idling stalling prob could be due to idle or fuel cut solenooid havin no earth

so check to se eif that brown wire and the wires on the carby have an earth

Thanks Sideshow. Mr Shin gave me some tips on earthing wires from the loom to the inlet manifold and I have cleaned up an earth wire from the inlet manifold to the drivers side strut tower. Problem sems to be resolved but I will follow up on the temp gauge brown wire on the weekend to make doubly sure. Cheers.
