icon5.gif  Running a MK3 fuel pump resistor on Walbro pump? Mon, 09 June 2003 09:07 Go to next message
The Walbro pump i've just put in is quite noisy, I want the car as quiet as possible.

As soon as I blap the throttle the pump actually quitens up somewhat and it's not the exhaust noise dampening the noise of the pump either.

What do you guys think about running a fuel pump resistor like a MK3 fuel pump resistor which is switched in via the ECU whilst the car is cruising and idling to drop voltage and hence noise from the pump?

I was thinking about switching it in using a spare output on the Microtech activated at say 2psi.

Anyone forsee any problems?

sounds rational enough to me

i guess it would be prudent to check that with the lower potential at idle +, that youre going to get enough flow (but from the sounds of it, it providing plenty already)

obviously, if the pressure drops with the lower potential, youll have to redo your fuel maps to suit.

this may cause damage to the pump as it was not designed to run at a lower voltage. I would contact the makers or distributors of the pump and question them first

So the pump is stressing(causing the noise) because of the pressure buildup between the pump and the regulator?
What about using a pressure release valve? Like the kind used on injected sprint cars.

I like the original idea though. Running electric motors at a variable speed is not a problem as long as its under the specified voltage.
In fact running electric motors at a variable speed is actually better for them then running at a constant speed.

Freaky, I was thinking of doing the exact same thing just this weekend! The Walbro was starting to piss me off (I was driving for about 5 hours straight), and the 2JZ-GTE is set up from the factory with a fuel pump resistor which is bypassed once the engine loads up. A friend has a spare Mk3 resistor so it should just be a matter of wiring it in with a relay.

I guess it would be a good idea to find out if the Walbro pump can handle lower voltages, however lots of the Mk3 boys in the US use Walbro's and to my knowledge they have no problems using the factory resistor setup.

Yeah, they get annoying just cruising along. I want to have almost no cabin noise if I can.

I don't think running them at a lower voltage would affect them too much, as long as its not rediculously low like 4-5volts.

Also you guys might be interested in knowing I measured the voltage at the tank of the feed to the fuel pump.

It was 12.56volts!!!

At the battery was 14.2 volts!!

Almost a 2v drop through the circuit opening relay, fuses and wiring to the back of the car. I had expected this though.

That's interesting to know! That being the case I think I'll wire the pump directly to the battery (which is rear mounted) via a fuse and relay.
