Hi Guys,

I'm new to the board. To introduce myself, I own a 1976 RA23 Celica. It's a bit rusty but I'm slowly fixing it all. I've recently just redone the WHOLE interior which looks pretty nuts.

It currently has a 5 speed box and a 16R? 1.6L motor (sposed to have the 2.0L) but I bought it this way. I redline the thing daily for the past year and it still goes, I aint even changed the oil or plugs! Shocked

Before the thing goes pop I've decided to drop in a new motor. I've seen a fluro green one with a 3T-GTE, BUT, after discovering this website, have seen that a 1G-GTE will virtually bolt straight in!!! Cool

I was hoping you guys can give me your oppinions and steer me in teh right direction. I am after the simplest option, will spend around $2000 for motor and box, am curious about insurance and RWC, if I go the inline 6, and what happens if I do get pulled over by the coppers? I am also in Victoria. Oh and whats the cost of a suitable radiator, fuel pump, lift pump and surge tank?

Please tell me whatever you can!

Thanks

The 1G-GTE is probably the most cost-effective option. There's stacks of info available on this swap, just do a search.

Obviously you should get the car engineered if you don't want trouble with the cops. Speak to a certified engineer BEFORE you begin your project. Your local transport authority should have a list of engineers you can speak to.

Radiator: get your stocker upgraded with an extra core. Fuel pump: VL Commodore external pump (Bosch) will do the job nicely for less than $100 (I got mine for $35). Lift pump and surge tank: probably unnecessary in an RA23, although some will disagree with me. My RA23 has been running without one for years and it doesn't surge ever.

for 2k you should be able to get a 1ggte half cut, i believe to be the best alternative when doing the conversion
i used in my conversion

engine (all accessories)
brake booster
master cylinder
radiator
tacho
gearbox
gearbox member
the list goes on
do a search and u will find all the info u need

BUT! is the 1g-gte swap is the EASIEST swap of them all?
Out of all the motors???
Norb, does your RA23 have the 1ggte? Have you done it yourself, how did it go?

What would typical engineers say - obviously brakes, maybe petrol cap filler... anything else? Ner I'll do the swap and worry when I get pulled over Very Happy

I've spoken to adelaide jap wrecker who said $1500 motor $500 supra box, $2000 for the lot Sad

I'm in Victoria, can someone help me out with finding a halfcut, I saw one for $1800 but SOLD, any ideas where to get one, I dont mind freight, etc. Another guy told me $2500 for the halfcut...

Also when you say "search" do you mean search for posts on this forum?

THANKS!

Yes, use the search function on these forums; 1G conversions have been discussed ad infinitum.

The 1G conversion is not the easiest engine conversion; that would have to be the 18R-G swap, which I did a few years back. That's as easy as they come, since it has the same block as the original engine; just plug and play! The EFI version is the best one to get (18R-GEU) but there's a bit more work involved, ie wiring and fuel system. It's still no biggie though, and it's still a much easier conversion than the 1G.

Having said that, the 1G-GTE has 210hp from the factory (with plenty more available with an exhaust and bleed valve), while the 18R-G has 130-140hp with not much more available without spending a fair amount of money. That's why I said the 1G is the most cost-effective; it costs more, but it's much more effective! I guess it comes down to how much you want to spend and what results you're after.

I'm about to do a 18R-G swap, plus I think I'm getting a supercharger put on as well.

18R-GEU would be good but then there's all the wiring for the injection, which I couldn't be bothered with (appart from the fact I know and understand carbie's, injection is a whole other world)

But my suggestions would be an 18R-G(EU)if you can find a good one, but as you're willing to pay more i'd go the 1G-GTE.

I really comes down to how much you are willing to spend, and how much work you are prepared to do yourself. If you get a pro to do the 1g-gte swap I from what I have heard it will be around $4-6 grand with all the engineering done.

I'd love to have done a 1G-GE with the map sensor swap into my Ra23. it came out with 160Hp but there are getting hard to find at a good price. one guy on this forum got one for $950.00 if it was that price I would seriously think about it.

I went for the 18rgeu. It was easy to put in. Once you know what the EFi does and how it work it is easy. So do some research like the others said and find out what you are prepared to do yourself.
