100kw smallport rev limit? Thu, 12 June 2003 00:52 Go to next message
Am dropping one into the racecar - totally stock to begin with, except for the extractors.

Can anyone tell me what the rev limit is? any low $$$ way of overriding or removing it? Can I gain power by changing the throttle body? any suggestions for the replacement?

Would adjustable cam gears be worth the effort? Esp as stock? or wait till Motec is in and do it then????

no doubt this will lead to more questions! Ive searched back through threads already - but am after more specific info.

Apparently the standard rev limit on the 100kW is 7600RPM, but I find my tacho needle reads just over 7000rpm when I hit the cutout, but I think my tacho is dodgy.

The rev limit is controlled by ignition via the ECU, so unfortunately can't see any cheap way of overriding it, bar replacing the ECU.

Adjustable cam gears are probably not worth the effort running standard cams, best wait until you grab some aftermarket camshafts.

Sam

adj cam gears arent a bad idea if youre after a few extra HP. they wont boost performance all 'round, but if you sit down and tune the thing in a narrow operating band, you can sqeeze a bit of them...

A good intake and exhaust will make a lot of difference, other things like flywheels etc... basically anything that reduces drag.. help as well

My Tafe techer put a 4AGE in a Off Road Buggie ages ago and said that they tried changing the T/B setup and said that with one T/B on each end of the Plenium was better then just having one. They also choped the top off the plenium and welded a plate on with 2 T/B on top which was right in the air flow and he said it worked great. I'll try find out more if u want?? Any if his mate still has it i'll see if i can get some pics.

Mate, any pics would be great!
Im interested in any idea where I can pick up power from engineering and low cost!
Would 2 TB's bugger the sensor readings?

It will changing the air flow in the plenium and may effect the MAP sensor abit (thats if u are running one) other wise i dont see why it wouldnt be fine.

Hey IRA11Y,

define "a good intake". are there any easy and worthwhile conversions out there for these motors?

Basically Im after cheap hp before I put motec in it!

I was told that there is a rev limiter at 8500rpm. am i thinking of a different version of the 4age? maybe the big port 86kw version?

I have a powerchip added to my ecu and it has removed the cut-out. Mine cost nearly $800, but there are cheaper Powerchips for the 4AGE that don't give a bigger power increase, but still remove the rev cut-out. I haven't tested this of course, but have done 8100 without it cutting (it always gets there really fast in 1st)

You might want to take a look at these two sites... They give a good explanation of the 4age engines and modifications.

The red-line is 7600 rpm but in second gear you should be able to hit 8000rpm

My bro has a AE86 with a 4age 86kw it rev's out to about 7800 i think on the taco but i can take that out too 8000rpm but i don't think it really matters because it wouldn't pull that much if you rev it that hard! your better off changing at 7000rpm

blacksta is right
u need to change gears at max torque not max hp

the extre revs is just fukin the engine

i think 800 bucks for a powerchip is too much fo rwhat u get

u can get a cheap aftermarket programmable ecu for that

goin aftermarket ecu on a n/a enigne wont gain u too much

goin big cams stuffs up the idle on a standard ecu aswell

so beware b4 u go wastin yr money

I don't think there would be much merit in changing gears at max torque...that would mean I'd be changing gears in the Celica at 2800rpm every gear...which would to NOTHING for acceleration Razz

I thought the idea was to try and keep in the meat between max torque and max power.
