My 3S-FE just lunched itself

Well the engine in my Celica has finally decided to give up the ghost. It's making some god awful noises and has left a nice puddle of oil in carport. The big end bearings are destroying themselves and I have no real desire to see a conrod fly out the front of the block so I have decided that an engine replacement is in order.
At this stage I have four options:
1. Find someone who can do a backyard engine swap of a 3S-FE and pick up an engine for $650 from Sydney.
2. Give Capital Parts Plus $1500 to supply and fit an imported 3S-FE
3. Give Belconnen Engine Centre $2800 to supply and fit an new engine (or get mine rebuild for the same cost)
4. Find a place in Canberra that will rebuild the engine for less than $2800 or do some work to it.
Can you guys in Canberra give me some advise as to what you think the best option is? I personally think #2 is the way to go because they give a 2 year parts and labour warranty.

Why dont you fix it yourself ?
Unless the big end bearings have spun then you should be able to get away with fixing it yourself for under 1,000 dollars or so.
Take the engine out drop the sump and have a look at the damage. considering if the cyl bore is still ok all you have to do is lift the crank shaft and just put in new main bearings and big end bearings.

I think you should definitely go for the engine swap, but forget about the 3sfe. its nothing special. you can get 3sge halfcuts for $1200 and engines for around $750. it's definitely worth the investment.its good for 103kw at the fly . DOHC 16 valve blah blah blah. i think the 3sfe was just 8 valve. tell me if i'm wrong though.

Ben,
3S-FE is still 16 valve.
Mazda 626,
Take into account that AE86 doesn't know anything about internals and therefore is not going to go pulling apart an engine if he does knowhow to.
AE86,
I agree with Ben. You should go the 3S-GE route. Don't forget to grab a 3S-GE computer or you will be limited to the power supply of the 3S-FE computer.

Spot on Phil. I'm happy to get in amongst it for a project car, but not for my everyday ride.
I am warming to the idea of getting the 3S-GE. One of the mechanics mentioned that the fuel rails would need to be changed but the way he said it made me think it would be a big effort to do. With the computer, is it simply a matter of plugging the GE one in, or is there more to it than that?

Well its a good place to learn keep the engine and do it up inyour shed or something buy a manual and your set even if you dont ever go about fitting the engine back into the car least you got the accomplishment of doing it

put in a 3SGE cost should be around the same
the MAIN difference between the 3SFE and the 3SGE are the cams.
The F represents econonmy cams and therefore does not give that much power
while the G stands for 'sports' cams which gives u a higher power output.
The block is still the same but the ECU between the 3SFE and 3SGE is significantlly different.
Good luck with the swap i think the 3SGE would give u more satisfaction though!

/starts rant. Has anyone had dealings with SSS Automotive in Sydney? I looked at their website where it had the 3S-GE for $750. I ring them up and they say they don't have any, and don't know when more will be coming in. Why not update the site? Anyway, that aside, their 'warranty' consists of 1 month only. Not even parts and labour. Why bother even having a warranty? Then he has the nerve to say I should take the engine to Neal Bates Automotive for a rebuild! He must have mistaken me for a millionaire /ends rant.
Ben - where can I get the GE for $750? Was it SSS?

Try Jap Used Spares in Sydney, theyre in the phone book.
You can probably beat them down by $50 or so aswell, Other than that, East Keylor Wreckers in melbourne are the place to go for all things TOYOTA. I'm not 100% on the spelling of keylor, but they offered the best price when i was looking for my tranny, so their engines might be cheaper too, problem is freight from there is $110, just for a transmission!!
Failing Either of those, ring bates automotive in hume and ask them where you might find one, just dont ask them to find one for you!
