Stronger 4WD gearbox replacement for RAV4?

Hey guys...
Just mulling over the plans for my project, and I saw a thread on here that said something about a 4WD gearbox from another Toyota. Would I be able to drop in a stronger 4WD gearbox into the RAV4 if it's to succeed in it's ¼-mile destiny?  If so, from what model, and roughly how much would the job cost?
Also, I heard on another forum that the RAV4 shares it's drivetrain heritage with the Celica GT-4. Can anyone confirm this? If it's true, I'll have no trouble with the quarter's!

Hey there Bro, how r ya?? i know u can get a lsd box for the ravs, i will find out the price 2morrow, i'll also find out if the gt4 running gear is the same, i know its a big job to get a box out of a rav so im not sure how much they will charge, i remember a customer asking for it ages ago but never went ahead with it

Thanks, appreciated Eddie. Also, bear in mind when you do find out which gearbox will replace the stocker, it's not like say a LandCruiser box with the normal 5-sp shift and the Hi-Lo on a stick next to it. The RAV has a normal 5-sp shift with constant 4WD.

hey bigfella, yeah i know about the boxs, work on the cars everyday, joys of working at a toyota dealership
ok here goes, theres no lsd box for them only a lsd diff
the gt4 box will bolt on because its the same block and head but dont know how she will sit into the car or mounts line up.

Sorry if I underestimated you mate, I didn't know you worked at Toyota... 
Don't the RAV4's have 2 diff's? Would they BOTH need to be LSD in that case? I'm not up on the workings of LSD diffs, only their by-product at the tyres...
Any news on the GT-4 drivetrain similarities/heritage? Someone on the RAV4 forum (I think) told me that they have the same running gear, but I never got verification on this.
Ok, so if it's the same block and head (the block being the important part), hell I'm no mechanic but the gearbox setup comes with stick, gear-housing, gears, gear-mounts, bell-housing and what else? Should they mate up in theory?
Is there anyone else that would know for sure?

Rav4 has 3 differentials, front, centre and rear. The centre differential distributes torque split between front and rear diffs and the viscous coupling in the transfer case limits slip between front to rear. you only really need a rear LSD.... front requires the gearbox to come apart.
The gt4 box is of a similar setup and will fit on the motor, but most likely driveshaft ends wont fit into the box, tailshaft will be too long, mounts will be different for the transfer and x-member, etc. you wont know until you try, i am offering suggestions but i dont exactly know how it will fit, i have never fit one on a rav4, but its a beefier box than the rav4. but remember outer cv splines to hub are all the same from toyota so you can use gt4 driveshafts =]

depends what importers are asking and if you can find one complete with shafts.....so sorry a ball figure i couldnt give u, give some importers a call....you may need a custom tailshaft which is close to $300-$400....but your going to have to redo whole drivetrain...if you strengthen one point, the next weakest part will take the load and break...if you find a GT4 tailshaft and rear diff / suspension cradle and rear shafts let me know please as i might be interested.

gidday , if your seriuus about the conversion then why dont you go the whole hog and fit the 3s-gte engine as well. they do fit in as it has been done. the st165 engine and gearbox is what the whole rav drivetrain is based on anyway so why not put the whole shebang in and start playing with wrx's with a relyable engine. the only problem is that the rear diff is sort of a one off unit and the celica diffs dont straight bolt up to the mounts , if you want i can talk to the guy that actually did the conversion and get some more info off him. i can also get the whole running gear package in for you if wanted , give me 3-4 days to confirm a definate price though.

Just so happens that I have a GT4 shell with full running gear (no, the engine I will keep;)
It comes with a GT4 gearbox that I am willing to seperate. The car has only done 29,000klms! I have has this car for about 3½ years now and salvaged various parts for my GT4's that I have owned.
Unfortunately, due to sumprik-stealing, It no longer has the seats and the dash and other interior type stuff has been sold to Moss.
I am willing to part with for $1500 and thats negotiable.
I also have a set of bilsteins (-1 front strut) and a set of King springs to suit any st185.
Maybe I should put a copy of this in the for sale section ! :)

Hey Eddie - I'd be interested to find out whatever you can from your mate on the whole conversion process, what's involved and how much it's gonna run up. Thanks dude.
Question - what kind of internals does the st165 engine run; I take it that's the 3S-GTE block/head setup? If it's a stronger standard setup than the RAV's 3S-FE donk's internals, I'd be keen to find out more about it and how much boost it can run up with a T-28 Garrett (the AVO kit)
