have you tried changing the bulb?
the low beam element is switched off when high beam is turned on, so if youve blown your high beam, itll just look like your lights turn off when you throw the switch forward.
just try the simple things first.

Hmmm i've changed bulbs... Worked fine for a month. On friday morning i checked them out n they worked again. And last night they didn't work... I'd really like to fix up this prob.
I usually drive around with highbeams on. I can't adjust my headlight to point forwards more either.. They basically point at teh ground almost.... not much projection.
Anyone can help meout?
P.S the screws on my headlights are stuffed... can't adjust them i think....

this problem happens alot in the ae82 corollas which i'm pretty sure use the same high/low beam selector, its in the selector, so just walk down to your nearest wrecker and get a whole new blinker/wiper assembly, mine cost $25, then just take off your steering wheel and replace it, its really easy, I'd help you out with it but i'm in sydney, you can do it by yourself and all you need is a 14mm socket and a 1 point philips screwdriver, hope this helps
Chris...
ps. i assume that when you pull the h/beam thing it works but when you push to hold it on without assistance it turns all your lights off?

I`ve got almost the same problem in my ke36 the lights switch off when i put high beams on but the high beam dash light comes on but.... when i pull the switch back to flash the beams on they come.
I`ve chect all wires and all i can think of is switch or head light can thinger u know like the flasher can only for the high/low beams. i`ve got new head lights and switch but havent instaled the switch of yet so i`ll have to get back to u once the mew switch is in.

I had the same with my celica. I spoke to an efi guy i knew he said it is a common toyota thing, told me to swap the whole column swith and it fixed it perfect. It ended up being the connection between the wiper/headlight/indicator clip and the loom. A short fryed it. Maybe you could bypass it if that is the problem and if you cant find a the part.
