Aus-spec TA22's never came with a 2-piece shaft, but I suspect the GT's did. Aus-spec RA23/28's were fitted with a 2-piece shaft.

Norbie is spot on mate !
The JDM and Aus spec TA22 GT had a 2 piece tail shaft from factory. (Not sure about the american market. They were not really GT's they just had the trimming but none of the engine hardware so i dunno about there tailshafts. )

Two-piece tailshafts are usually implemented to reduce drivetrain vibrations (ie they're easier to balance), and in a live-axle application like a Celica they have the added benefit of reducing unsprung mass.

An RA23 two piece tailshaft is the same length as a TA22 one. I have measured them and am %100 sure. I actually fitted a one piece TA22 tailshaft to my old RA23 when the centre bearing failed. I see no reason at all why the RA23 2 piece shaft will not bolt into a TA22. The only modification needed is to change the yoke over.
I was under the impression that one piece tailshafts were stronger. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

yo tan man, im with you there, i thought that with the single piece that you would loose less power to the wheels, because there is one less join the power has to travel through to reach the wheels.
