Loosening Diff Bolt Fri, 13 June 2003 03:15 Go to next message
Ok trying to get the filler bolt off my diff and the f#$%er just wont move! (Happy I wasn't stupid enuf to drop the oil and then find I can get the bolt off to fill it up tho!)

Anyway I can swing (read hold 60kgs off the end of my socket) off it and it won't budge, took it to the local mechanic and he could do the same...tried hitting it with a hammer, which didn't seem to help.

I have sprayed it with WD40 for the past 2 days, also no help it seems. The only things I can think of left to try are

1) Find someone with a rattle gun to wack on it
2) Weld a dirty great big nut onto the existing nut and put it on a hoist to put a 10m bar on it
3) Drain the diff, and heat the bolt via an oxy and then try and get it off... (not a real fan of this idea, what happens if we stil can't get the bolt out!)
4) Take it to a diff shop, get a fixed quote and let them figure it out? Evil or Very Mad

Anyone got any help for me! Very Happy

Cheers
Wilbo

If you weld a nut to it with a arc welder and not a mig so you can generate some decent local heat it might work. I use to be a diesel mechanic and when i had a stuck sump bolt this usually worked but try a rattle gun first just in case you can get it off then you wont have to get a new filler plug. Good luck with it anyhows.

The diff's still in the car, right? If so, think yourself lucky, as I needed to put new oil in mine before putting it back in my car, and do you think I could get the bloody bolt to budge? Mad I'm thinking "Shit I'm going to have to pay someone to do this" Embarassed I tried hitting it with a hammer, hammering a 1mm smaller socket onto it (with limited success); pretty much everything I could think of....Then (in frustration) I whacked it with the flat back of a hatchet I have lying around then had another heave on the socket. Lo and behold, it worked! Very Happy

I guess the moral is:

The next try may be the one that works.

If not, quick weld, attach socket, attach breaker bar to socket and PULL!!!! Laughing

Yeah they are a real pain in the arse to get out.. I gave up on the one in the sprinter as it was just starting to round the head.

Ended up taking it to a mechanic (one of the few times i've ever taken a car to one), and got them to undo it. Think they welded something to it.

In the Celica I was having similar problems, ended up pulling the pan rod off to give me some more room to move put a small length of exhaust pipe over a big ratchet and it finally came undone.

Not much help.. Just wanted to share my hate of diff bolts.

Aww Fudge, I thought someone would be here to give me some advice like

"put some tomato sauce on it, turn around three times and it will magically come off".... j/k of course

not "your F@$%" Laughing

Btw Jason why will I need a new filler plug if I weld onto it? What wrong with filler bolt with a huge head for the next time? Smile

Cheers

wait a minute
I had a similar problem. easiest way is to get a cold-chisel, and hit into it with a hammer so you have the chisel wedged into the actual nut - then you have a lever as such and you can hit the thing out with the hammer. trust me try this before you go cutting with an oxy...

You need to get lots of freinds with big muscles to take in turns. It will finally let go.

Try rost off ....thats tuff rocks

with enough leverage any nut can come off....so get leverage....

and if your having THAT much trouble...only a REALLY powerfull rattle gun will do the tricks

so In my opinion

a) U just need more leverage
b) its all rusted and and if u try and get it off it'll snap

so solve the problem of b....try rost off or WD-40 and heat the thing up

Thanx

I had the same problem with my MA61...but i had the whole diff out...but i did what supraboy suggested, and it seemed to work fine...admittedly i buggered a $10 bolt...but that might be better than damaging something if you're a bit dodgy under a car with an oxy...

Umm pretty well in the city, Hawthorne. Very Happy

Gonna go and visit a mate who is a diesel mechanic tomorrow and it will be getting a bit of elbow grease to say the least (not to mention a bloody good smacking with a hammer Evil or Very Mad )

So far it seems like only horror stories! I shudder to think the last time it was changed..might explain the slight noise if there is only a little oil left Rolling Eyes

Man you guys are the type of people that mechanics have nightmares about. Talk about butchering the bolt.

These bolts use a copper washer. It is there to seal it. When the diff gets hot, the copper expands and thats why they are so hard to undo.

What you need to do is get a fairly heavy steel hammer and give it a few solid whacks on the head. This will crush the copper washer enough to unbind the threads and if there is any head left on the bolt, you should be able to get it off with the right size socket or ring spanner. It will still be tight but manageable.

If you have damaged the head, I advise going to Toyota to get another bolt. That way you shouldn't have any problems next time.

Last time I had a problem with a bolt, my mechanic friend told me to give a hit on the side of the bolt with a centre punch... worked like a charm...

LOL no new diff needed! Very Happy All done, but have come to the conclusion that the noise is the front uni..will be fixing that as soon as Confused Note to self, do not assume noise is diff Embarassed

Anyway, what worked for me was a bit of hammering and finial getting some leverage (the big 80kg+ guy on the end of the wrench helped tho! ).

Thanks for the help guys!

Cheers
