we spoke about this at tafe a few weeks ago and my tafe teacher said to use dot 3 if it recomends it. i cant remember for what car but there was one he said had some pretty major problems when someone someone used dot 4 instead of 3. so id just put it dot 3 to be safe however i doubt you would have any problems.

can't you get stuff that says, 'suitable for both dot3 and dot4 applications'?

If you have dot 3 you can use dot 4...
You can use higher numbers but not lower ones...

We use Dot 4 and super Dot 4 at work... I read the label one day and it said "Suitable for all Dot 3 applications"... This was a Castrol bottle so just have a read of the label and that should tell you...
And as Flem said, check your pads and linings (if any)...
