I was wondering if anyone had any possibilities for doing up a 79 4K engine.

I was thinking about a performance carbi
then i was thinking about boring out the cylinders and putting in some 4AG-E Pistons
then i was thinking about seting up a turbo
then i was thinking a supercharger

are any of these good ideas or does anyone have a better idea.

the universal better idea is:
1. remove 4k engine
2. place 4k engine in rowboat with large quantity of explosives
3. push row boat out into harbour
4. detonate explosives
5. engine conversion time!

There is actually a great little website outlining what to do to extract good power from the little 4K. The bulk of it involved fitting a 3K head (some have larger ports than the 4K, and the smaller combustion chamber results in increased compression). You can pick one of those heads up for under $50, surface it for 40 and the head gasket might set you back 30 - that is a budget power up if ever I have seen one.

They are a great motor and are quasi indestructible. I had a 4K/3K hybrid KE30 for 6 years as my run around. I was most intrigued to find this website that outlined exactly what I had done some 8-9 years earlier!

Here is that site.

Good luck.

well i cant vouch for the 4k's ability to make decent power, but there are a few on the forums here who seem to know what it takes to get them going faster

i can, however tell you that these engines must be close to indestructable... 10 mins going in circles in 3rd gear didnt even manage to kill my little 4k. umm so i heard from a friend of a friend... Rolling Eyes

anyways, on a serious note, if you want just a bit more go, it'd be pretty cheap to muck around with the 4k, wont be horribly fast, but faster. as said above, dont bother with a turbo or any of that crap, you'd probly be going faster with a na 4ag, something i'll have to get around to when my sis buys herself a car Very Happy

well, 100hp is pretty realistic with sensible mods and won't make it a pig on the road... above that and you start to need to do some extra things to make the valve train survive.....

full race motors go up to around 150hp..

whatever you do, you can only try to increase the volumetric efficiency as cloe to 100% as possible. same goes for any engine... the bottom line is that there is a theoretical limit on how much torque a 1.3L motor can make NA, and you want to get as close to that as possible in your chosen rpm range and still have it fun and driveable.

will you be at the dyno day? i'll have my 4K there so you can have a look... or PM me..... or join 'oldcorollas' yahoo group..
