Busted Cruise Control ST162

My cruise doesn't work, which is going to equate to speeding fines sooner or later, so the folks at Sideshow are going to look at it for me later this week hopefully, but I thought I would just put this out there if anyone had had experiences with cruise on these cars.
I check the diaphram for a split or something, and it it seems to be sealing well, though it doesn't move when I try and suck it (that is apply some vacuum with my lungs )
There is vacuum on the hose when the car is running, but I can't exactly test it at speed in my driveway now can I?
The light comes on when I push the button near the radio, but none of the steering wheel switches do anything.
Does anyone have any ideas, I am thinking that it may be a wiring issue as the dude who owned the car before me did the worst job on the radio I have ever seen.
Do the cruise motors go very often? ANY ideas would be so helpful for when we look at it later.
Thanks guys,
Rob

From one ST162 owner to another, have you ever put your car over a dyno? i have the same setup as you, but using a pod filter and no extractors, what kind of power do you make? or more importantly, what kind of cars does your 162 shit all over?

Well I would love to know what power it puts out. I know it beats my mates ST185 Celica all the time and his AE92 SX Corolla and most other little things without turbo, ie CRX's, Lancers, Civics. There are lots of them around with all rice and no go.
Actually, it has been a bit sluggish recently, I think I need to change my fuel filter. I also worry about the cold-air pipe feeding a lot of dust onto my filter.
So, how does this fix the old cruise?? hehe

Yeah i dyno'd mine before the cold air induction and with an oil fould, crushed pod filter and it put out 66FWKW
A mate from the CCG, "wiso" on these forums has extractors and a k&n panel filter and his puts out 70FWKW. Get it dyno tuned, it will make the workd of difference

Ah sweet thanks... I will!
What exactly does a dyno tune involve?

Well basically they check things like the fuel mixture right through the rev range, making sure your car gets teh right mixture when in needs it. i noticed and instant increase in torque

Sorry, but how do you dyno tune a stock EFI car? I can imagine they might fiddle with the overall timing, and make sure everything is in order.
To make any real changes they'd need to alter the fuelling and ignition mapping, which is something locked away in the non-programmable heart of the Toyota ECU.

Not trying to put a downer on it, just making sure you know all the facts before you get ripped for something that will do little to nothing at all without a programmable ECU.

Justcallmefrank: To the best of my knowledge, the mixture of a stock efi car of any make can still be adjusted. But let me just confirm that before i put a 3rd foot in my mouth

No problems dude Just think about it though, if it was possible, people wouldn't bother with getting a programmable ECU. In the case of some cars like an R32 Skyline, or a CA18DET Silvia, they can be programmed by reprogramming the EPROM chip, but all Toyota ECU's are locked.

Yeah dude, you're right. What i should have said was that they will CHECK the mixture throughout the rev range!
thanks for the heads up frank

What?! My car an auto!!! Hell no! Over my dead body.. *settles down*
There were a few manuals out there with cruise and this is one of them, I have seen one other around. Either that or the dude swapped the g-box on me before I bought it, and that is why it doesn't work, but they do exist.
I didn't think the Toyota was re-programmable, but Ben you said you got something done. Be interested in that. I think my next mod is exhaust and that should be done before any programming goes on, but we pretty much decided earlier this year that there are better things to spend money on than a computer on a fairly standard engine like mine. That was the consensus around here anyway.
