i am looking to do the same thing in my '74 , i was thinking of enlarging the oval holes that are already there and using a 8 - 10mm think MDF board over the whole back panel

you might be able to fit over the original holes if you get some thick mounting pods..... but some of them pods (the decent looking ones really) cos almost as much as a decent set of 6x9's. when i got my ta22 someone had basically hacked at the original holes and ripped the hole open, so my speakers fit right in, but it is a prick that they fucked up the parcel shelf so hugely.

you could just take it to a car audio installer place and pretend to be interested in them doing the install, and just ask what they would do to get them in there

6 x 9's are a real bitch in a TA22. When I was having the bodwork done on mine I custumised the parcel shelf by welding metal plates over the original holes and cutting new ones to position the speaker the other way.

6x9's are easy, you wanna make a MDF shelf to cover the rear the metal parcel shelf that will give you that little bit of extra hight that is and advantage that way you will not have to make the holes quite so large, i have had 7x10"s into a ta22 with very very little modification to the metal within the rear shelf without the use of ugly pods of spacers, if you use your head its a a sinch!!!!!

i am very fussy when it comes to my TA22 and i spared no expense, and spent a lot of time to get my 6x9's just right.

i began by removing that flimsy parcel shelf cover and used it as a template for a new MDF parcel shelf. now when it comes to thickness, the thicker the better, and i went for 18mm.

now the location is a problem cos the cut outs on the metal parccel shelf are too small and in the wrong location for correct placement, so i got out the tin snips and the hacksaw and made sure there was enough room.

with the 18mm shelf, and the speakers dropped in there was about 3mm clearance from the magnet on the speaker to the edges on the fuel tank. sweet!!!

make sure you bolt down your MDF parcel shelf as good as possible. in fact i used 6 T-nuts that are not visible as they are covered in carpet, and the seat belt bolts also help to hold it down. also a sheet of sound deadenning between the MDF and the metal will make it sound better too. i used self adhesive bonet sound deadener.

with it set up as it, the sound is so good, that the 6x9's running only off my head unit are often mistaked for subwoofers. most people can't believe that i don't have even an amp.

check the pics on my site, i think there may be some shots with the speakser visible.

be very careful the parcell shelf is structual surport of the car! cutting it can result in crack in ya paint along the rear pillars, i would recommend using the 18mm MDF, that should allow the speakers to slot into the standard holes.

6x9's in a ta22 is piss easy - once again - use a faitly decent MDF to make a new parcel shelf, Cover it in some neat black marine carpet - then make 2 pods out of the same MDF - carpet them too - Cut speaker hole to suit, and holes for the rear seatbelts - screw together together- and slide in . I did a few small bends to give the speakers clearance for wiring ( used clarion 6x9's for mine ) then bolt the bugger down using the existing drilled holes in the parcel shelf ..

the whole parcel shelf was put in in less than 3 hours and cost less than 50 dollars to make - looked great - sounded FANTASTIC , and looked ultra neat ..

Anyone who says its hard - just dont know what they are doing Smile

With the excess MDF and carpet - i then made 2 matching pods for the doors - and slotted in a pair of 6.5 inch splits - and the whole System - without an amp - sounded awesome .. Sounded MUCH better than my current AMPED setup in my GT4 ..

With an amp and a subby added to a decent ta22 stereo - the car will sound cool and look cool !

ta22's have a very good cabin design for big stereo sound ..

Doriken - same comments were made about my 6x9's ..

and this only off a 4x35 headunit

the boot must produce good resonance Wink

" you got subbies in this man ?"

" nahh , just a set of 6x9's - off the headunit "

" no shit "

" look for yourself * opens boot - to show no amp or sub *"

* look of dumb amazement from supposed QULALIFIED brisbane car audio dude *

hey i had the same problem into my 22 i sat down and thought about it and it ended up being easy put your speakers on a angle and make up two spacers to go inbetween the the shelf and the speaker do this outside the car then put the hole lot in, my bro is a cabnet maker which made it a lot easier but pretty easy

the absolute best fix for this is to bugger off the 6x9's and get subs instead. After all it is a coupe and there ain't much boot space already, so what's a little less Laughing

not having a go at 6x9's but i prefer the sound out of splits/sub combination

however if you don't want a sub, 6x9's do give good bass.

I made a new parcel shelf for mine just the other day... it cost me $15 all up. I used 6mm mdf and got an off cut of sound deadener from clark rubber. We had a bit of trouble fitting it all in but it sounds awesome compared to the original piece of shit. I don't run 6x9s though, just some 16cm 3 ways.

mate has a ta22 with kenwood 7x10's mounted north-south, (front to back) so they only just fit and i dont think they could or actually own a set of covers.......his parcel was hacked to shit by previous owner to fit and they rnt even bolted in.

sound is awesome for oldskool 3-way 7x10 kenwoods and heaps of ppl do ask what sorta sub he has in the boot and amp etc.....
just the large 7x10 cones.....there are a fairly new pair of kenwood 7x10's with custom built in crossovers at what was formerly cashies on brighton road (now brighton cash n loans) i think........going for $120 but u can always haggle a bit.....i wish i had $100 bucks coz the dude let me test them and it was some gay ricky martin song and they were just sittin on the table and the bass was HUGE......the crossover was a good idea.

wouldnt have been to hard to do either.

(slight hijack) n e way he has 18 mm MDF along with hacked to shit parcel but the 7x10's fit ok....(no covers)

dont bother with the 6 x 9. they are outdated. much better putting in some nice 6's. produce a much better sound then 6x9s ever will. also much easier to but in. check boards like car audio australia for a nice set of well care for preloved speakers

Yeah i just put in my new parcel shelf, and 6 x 9's last week. Was a fiddly job but its possible, I used the 6mm MDF and then mad 13mm (i think)spacers just cut out with the jigsaw and carpeted to suit. they just clear the window, and the seat back, but they look unreal in there. Put them in the parcel shelf and then slide the whole unit in tho, otherwise u wont do it. You may also have fun doing up the passenger side seatbelt bolt after they are all in!!

Just DONT cut the steel parcel shelf, it can make your car dangerously weak even! my mate did in his RA23 now every time he drives down gutters etc, you can hear the back of the car creak and moan as it twists!

can prob. get a pic if you want.
