Came in 2 forms intercooled (water-air) and non intercooled. 165 and 145 hp respectively. They ran a small Garrett T03 (42/49 AR's) off a log style exhaust manifold and produced around 6 psi boost.

Base CR was 7.6:1. Intake valves are quite small but exhausts are the same size as 5M. Unfortunately they are hard to find nowadays, but there is one in a Jap import wrecker in Adelaide for $1000!

The usual thing to do is rip off the turbo stuff and whack it on a late 4M or a 5M. It produces a significant improvement in performance over the standard 5M. You need to consider oil feed/return lines, and fuelling it. MTEU dizzy automatically retards timing with the onset of boost.

MS75 had one of these producing ~500 hp.

See my 5MTE. http://members.optusnet.com.au/gianttomato/5MTE/5m te.jpg

I bought mine about 11-12 years ago for $200 (no loom or ECU)! There were at least 20 of them lying on the floor and never any shortage of them. Being a poor student back then I figured there had to be an easy way to get it going without ECU. No such luck. There was very little info on ECU's freely available back then...the wreckers/workshops were very secretive.

hmm.....

Do they use a lot of fuel (looking at the size of the thing, for only 2.0?

Are these worth considering or are they a not so good(reliability and performance)?

I looked at this 82' cressida wagon(looks like a bomb from appearance) sitting at this guys house. It had the MTEU engine (non intercooled). We could hear it running, but we couldn't go for a drive (broken torque converter). It was the "Jap import" engine according to the guy.

He was selling the whole car, which also has supra vented discs fitted with a spare recond gearbox (auto)

How much is this worth??? He wanted $1100ono

any thoughts?

The car doesn't drive dude. Is it rusted out? Offer him $500 without fitting the gearbox, feed him the line that it'll save him the hassle etc. Point to the rust, and anything else that's rooted.

Get the turbo/manifolds, loom, ECU and bolt it all to a 5M. Put that all in your Corona Mk2. Cheapish fun. Ultimately it's no beast, but it's a significant upgrade.

EDIT Ed, they're the wreckers that had one! Oh yeah and as for availability, to quote a phone conversation " ...we hardly ever get that shit in now....". True, not as glamorous as a 1J, but not the way to win friends and influence people.

Of course I didn't want the actual car! I was only interested in the engine/parts.

When I left, he told me he just wanted it out from his front yard, and to make him an offer.

just Say, I did put it in the corona, when you say, it will be no beast but will have an performance upgrade etc...,
What would I be expecting from the corona?
Would It be worth doing the conversion for this engine even?

OK. Don't expect it to out perform a 7MGTE/1JZGTE. It would be WAY better than your 2M and with some minor mods, it should beat a stock 5MGE. What's the fuel consumption like? No idea.
It's size is a reflection of it's age and when it was designed.

Not easily (like move firewall), and it would be an utter waste of time.
