How do you know when your master cylinder has failed?

My foot now goes down half way on the pedal before I get any stopping at all. Used to be heaps higher up the night before last. Sad

Anybody know why the handbrake isn't holding the car? It's a twin cam with disc brakes on the rear. They automatically adjust don't they? Freak

if you got low fluid it might have just sucked some air in, bleed it and see if it helps. otherwise there might be a crack in a line or it may be the master cylinder or one of the slaves. lots of possibilities. first point is to bleed it tho

Last week I checked it, and it was full. I'll find a mate and bleed it tonight. See if that has any effect.

Any ideas on the hand brake not holding?
