looks to me more like a microwave sensor or something like that.
A keyless entry uses radio waves and just needs a little wire ariel, usually under the dash or in the engine bay.

Does your car have a function that turns the headlights on when it gets dark automatically. If so then its the light sensor. My soarer has two things that look similar on the dash, one on each side.

nah no light thing...
climate control...define.(i was never really sure exactly what climate control was)
it has standard ma61 aircon if that helps

My guess would be temp sensor for the climate control.. they're normally situation up on the dash.

Its definetly the climate control. Cos none of my dashes have it, and all my cars have had standard aircon...or like mine atm, none

just looked up the haynes manual.
its a "solar sensor" for the aircon
and thanks 4 tha help guys

Yes its the climate control and the cap is UV sensitive to protect the element underneath.
If you remove the cap in direct sunlight there is a possibility of damage to the sensor, thus why it is black.
Make sure you havent broken it!

Does the temp actually vary, in degrees c, inside the car when the sun goes behind the clouds and comes back out etc?
