I have just finished spending a few hundred on the RA28 and took it for it's first big drive and 200km's into the trip the tacho went crazy (jumping) and the engine shortly after lost power and died.

I started it again and after dying a few times it kept surging but straightened itself out after about 3 minutes (i'm thinking dirty fuel) but the tacho is still jumping. As the square pin at the end of my speedo cable came loose (needs crimping again Razz) the tacho is the only way I have of keeping note of my speed.

What causes a jumping tacho and what do I need to replace.

The car is a 1977 RA28 with 18RGU and twin dual throat solex's.

Also, occasionally if I am keeping it at speed for say 5 min's without changing throttle I hear something akin to a single Fart coming from the carby side of the engine (could this be blowback or preiginition?) Will a tune fix this, or should I look at carby rebuild kits (or source some webbers?? *GRIN*).

Thanks in advance...

tacho is pulsed buy the negative side of the coil which is pulsed by the ignitor. Could possible be a faulty coil/ignitor.

LOL, I cannot win with this car :0) No matter how much I spend on it there's still more to do :0) If she wasnt such a sexy beast i'd throw it to the hounds :P~~

Alrighty, I will get the carb's balanced and the timing adjusted. I think it's the carb's cos the timing was done just recently. Spitting was occuring before the timing was adjusted though as well as after.

*#^$#*!!!!!

The problem ended up being that where the cable from the external condensor connected to the outside of the distributor was loose and grotty making a poor contact. I tightened it up and jumping tacho was a thing of the past :0)

Points are burnt after only 1000km, so getting replacement condensor tonight. Thanks ppls Very Happy
