RA60 Engine swaps

Guys
I don't know a real lot about this kinda thing, but have been reading up on all the tech articles and so on, and lots of engine stuff from around the board.....
I've got an RA60 with a 21R-C. Initially I wanted to drop a 1G-GTE in there, but the installation costs is a bit much. (I need to get all different mounts and shit right)
So, I was wondering whether the 22R and/or the 18R-G can go straight in, would I need to adjust any mounts or whatnot, and roughly how much to get an engine swapped?
Also, would these engines give me much more power/acceleration? I found old 1980s 'Motor Manual' road tests of the 21R-C RA60 and 2S-C SA63 (My friend has one). Their 0-100km/h times were around 15 secs and 12 sec respectively. Would either of the aforementioned motors give me a better acceleration or more power?
One final thing, is there any 'smaller' things I could do to my car to get better performance? Would it be worth turbo-ing a 21R-C, 18R-G or 22R? Or am I just getting silly.....
Thanks Y'all.

18R isn't a bad bet. it's a bit of an old pig, but goes fairly hard.
22R has EFI, which is good, but it's a sight heavier than the 21r-c, and not a lot of HP gains (but it's got noticably more torque down low)
not worth turboing the 21r .. by the time you got taht done properly you'd be better off with the 1g-gte conversion

i see, thanks.
ive seen a 22R for sale for $350.....is that a right price? how much would installation cost, and how much do you reckon i could sell the 21r-c (it runs very well) for?
ive just read that the 18r-g has 145 hp....is that correct? that fairly convincingly kills the 21r-c of 90 hp and the 22r of 108 hp.....
how much power does the 18r-g have, in kilowatts?
thanks

Seriously, the only cheap worthwhile budget swap would be an 18RG. You'd need to find one that is at least as new as the car though, as you can't put an older engine in the car.
As for the 22RE, for the stuffing around setting up the EFI, it wouldn't be worth it. I reckon you'd be better off waiting for a 1GGTE, or even a 1GGE, at least later on your car would be set up for a 1GGTE later on if you wanted.

Agreed; the only worthwhile low-budget swap for your car is a late-model 18R-GEU. It will be a significant power-up for your car but don't expect it to be a rocket.

If you're in NSW (not certain about the other states), then make sure the 18R-G is newer than your car. Otherwise the conversion won't be legal.
Doing any EFI engine will make it cost heaps more. You need an EFI fuel tank from SA63 or RA65, plus you need to install high pressure hoses and also do the wiring.

SA63 isn't EFI. You could probably get one from a Mk2 Supra too.

okay
ive been thinking of getting a 22r and ive read somewhere that putting a 21r head on it increases compression ratios. say i could get a friend to do the conversion, how much would it cost, and would it be a worthwhile upgrade, as the 18r-g seems to be a bitch to track down. anything else i could do to up the performance a little?
thanks for the help guys, im not too sure about all this stuff and you guys are helpin good

Sounds like you're talking about the 20R/22R hybrid which is popular in the US. Unfortunately 20R's were never sold here, and I don't know if 21R heads are the same. In any case, you'll find all the info you need on the Old Celica Club list:
http://www.celicas.org
To do this properly you have to do a full rebuild... not cheap. Keep your eyes open for an 18R-G, it's a much easier proposition!

alright thanks guys.
what about other things as well as the 18r-g? extractors, bigger exhaust? ive been told the RA60s already have a big enough exhaust on them, 2.5" or something.....

I built a 20r 22r hybrid years ago.........didn't work out like I expected, and norbie's right 21r heads aren't as good as 20r heads. Forked out fair amount of cash, hi tops, cam, side draught etc.....just never went very well.
Still always felt like a ute moter.
I ended up ditching it and swapping for an 18rg, which was a fair bit better, but not a "bolt-in" fit.
