I know that the second (or third) letter of Toyota model codes gives the floorplan of a car. But what does this mean exactly?

Can TA22 panels really be bolted onto a MA61 (or even JZA80)? Or is it just that the TA22 floor plan evolved and eventually became the basis of the MA61 despite being totally different from the original.

I think it's more like "A" is a front engine, RWD, 2door but after looking at corollas, I aint so sure, they had "E" for rwd and fwd cars...

the A just refers to a basic type of platform. In this case the A is shared between Celica, Carina and later the Supra and Soarer. It does not have any relation to FWD or RWD. The 2 refers to the generations, the floorpan is not always carried forward to the next generation so parts do not always interchange.
The Celica actually changed code from A to T around 1985 when it became FWD. The A code carried on with the Supra and Soarer.
There are some very informative sites on chassis codes if you use Google.
If I've made any errors I'm sure someone will correct me.

The A code really refers to the "chassis series", so you need to look at the number after that. The A6 chassis (MA61) is an evolution of the A2 chassis, but it's not the same.

The Soarer is a Z chassis; the A chassis is Celica/Supra/Carina only.
