Removing axle seals? RA28. Thu, 19 June 2003 23:58 Go to next message
Hello, anyone have some hints for removing axle seals on an RA28 diff housing?

I'm sure a slide hammer or something would make the job easier, but trying to do it just with the usual tools sitting in my garage.

Any tips?

Cheers
Joel

If your just trying to take the axles out from the housing, try putting a drum on backwards with the nuts on only a few threads. You can use the drum as a makeshift slide hammer.

My drums were pretty tight around the centre of the hub so it didn't work too well for me.

If that doesn't work, leave the drum on backwards, tighten the nuts and give the face of the drum a whack with a sledge hammer.

If it was me, I would visit my old man and pinch his slide hammer. Very Happy Maybe you could flash a bit of leg to your local mechanic and borrow one. It's not like they are used every day. As a matter of fact, I would be surprised if they get touched more than once every couple of months.

Yeah got that bit sorted (put the hubs on backwards etc)..

But i'm actually trying to replace the seals that sit in the diff housing before I put it all back together.

Got the new seals sitting here, just trying to get the old ones out.

Any suggestions on those??

Thanks
Joel

Is it the metal things at the inboard end of the axles or is it at the wheel bearings. I havn't had to rebuild a diff apart from changing centres over, so I am not totally sure what you are trying to change. If your still stuck I will call the old man and find out how he does it.

This isn't how it exactly is, but looks similar.

Seal sits just inside the housing.

It does... but its not.
Looks like the same seal i replaced on my RT104.

I got a piece of round perma-pine which i ground down on the bench grinder until it was the same diamater as the seal.
Using that and a hammer, i just hit it in.

Yes... was quite a bugger of a job tho.

I usually tap a small screwdriver blade between the housing and the seal. This opens up a gap, and then I tap a larger screwdriver in to open the gap up a bit more. Working your way up in screwdriver size, eventually you can grab some portion of it with some pliers or vice grips and pull it out, or lever it out with a really big screwdriver.
A slide hammer makes it easier.

I found that i could wedge a small epen end spanner in under the seal and then use the outside of the 'c' against whatever is inside the diff to lever it out
