3VZ-FE <- RWD? Fri, 20 June 2003 04:41 Go to next message
does anyone know if this engine came in a rwd car? i'm wondering how easy it would be to put in an ra28.

my dad has a 93 camry that goes pretty hard, and i know of an off road champ using this engine + 2 turbos + porche gearbox, which suggests its worth looking into.

thanks
ev

Hilux (Roll-ux) or *insert appropriate JDM-name here* Surf?

Something like that...I saw some bloke's site and he had a V6 in a Hilux...was talking about Supercharging the thing.

It came in the 4Runner I believe (at least in the US).

they were released in aus in the last of the 4runners though i believe they are tuned different from 4runner to camry. I have driven both cars and even though the 4runner is heavier it is verey sluggy(more than expected)

The Hilux/4Runners that were release here and US (89-96) had a 2 valve twin cam 3VZ-E, Not the quad 4 valved 3VZ-FE's. The Camry came the 3VZ-FE, but the problem with fitting them into RWD applications is the dizzy location. But the newer 5VZ-FE (3.4L Pardo/new V6 Hilux) is far better as they run a multi coil setup, (no dizzy) eat half the fuel and produce a heap more grunt. All you need is the 4Runner/Hilux bellhousing and engine mounts and go form there.

Check it out though, but you'll find that the 5VZFE doesn't come in the RWD Hilux, just in the 4WD versions.

What box type resides behind the 5VZ? I have this dumb feeling it is a R seies box (R150 or R151). Is this right? Maybe the bellhousing could be used with an R154?

3VZ-FE and also 22R-E gear-boxes in 4-runners are R150, R150F(?), R160 and R160F(?). I dont know whatta heck that F means but I think its either different ratios or it could mean boxy extension housing. Some boxes seem to have kinda boxy extension housing that bolts to transfer case and some ones look pretty normal RWD box. 4-Runner seem to be also in RWD in american markets(weird). All info is from Toyota EPC.

Yep, the Hilux box is basically an R154 with a transfer case attached. A friend of mine had his R154 rebuilt using Hilux parts, so the internals are obviously very similar. That being the case, you can put a VZ bellhousing on an R154 box, and you have a RWD V6!

I'm not sure, but I'd be surprised if a truck had the same ratios as a sports car. Smile

Speculative but you might be able to swap gear sets around.

Hey Guys,
The box in the 4wd hilux is acutally a G52!
The 1KZ-TE (3l Turbo diesel) uses an r series box.

I have the ratios at home if anyone is interested.

Hi theres a bloke in the us thats put a 7mgt into a v6 4runnner
or what they call tacoma with the 4wd r151 g/box and he stated that he had to make extension for the 7m r154 bellhousing cos
the 4wd input shaft was longer. That said i would asume that the vz bellhousing would be too long for a r154 g/box.
It not the norm for toyota to do something like this so please
dont count me on what i just said ,
search the web for 7mgt 4 runner or simmiler and you will find the car im talking about
