importing cars Fri, 20 June 2003 05:59 Go to next message

Just a question to do with imports!!
Is it possible to import a complete gt4 (205) and get complied here? - I am not sure of import rules but recall somewhere in the past something about cars can not be imported if they are available here?!

Does anyone know!?
Thanks

I am interested in this too.
My wife was recently in India and fell in love with the Hindustan Ambassador. (She used to have a kermit green Datsun 1200.) How do I go about getting one into Australia?

anything I say hereafter is all off the top of my head or from what I've heard.. Don't hold it against me if I am wrong..

Alright... I know of 4 schemes... Provided your car of choice satisfies one these, then it's eligible for import.

1. 15 y.o.
You could import and comply for road use ANY car that is older than 15 y.o. Period.
Compliancing for this is just the bare essentials. Seat Belts, side intrusion bars, fuel cap, labels, indicators, etc...
And you could do this any time.. I guess...
It's exciting because we now can get cars such as the sw20 MR2, Nissan skyline R32, 180sx(but they are already cheap now).

2. SEVS
This is the Sepialist Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme. This law basically says that you can import cars that haven't been sold here under full volume. This is on the provision that there is a workshop that can engineer and compliance a particular model for road use. For example, the series 6 RX-7 cannot be imported. This is because they were sold here in full volume (back in 1992), and isn't 15 y.o. yet. 180sx are common because there are MANY workshops that can comply this, and cheaply too.

Now, when you get a vehicle that IS eligble, you have to do some pretty extensive compliancing. Don't know exactly what these are, but it depends on the car. Sometimes, it goes all the way up to 10k. There have been some new SEVS laws out recently. This has limited the number of cars on the SEVS compliance list. And also, has made current rules tougher. For example, any car that leaves the shores of an exporter has to be bone stock.

3. Personal import
if you've owned and driven a car overseas, you can import it as a personal. Minimal compliancing required. I think it is the same with the 15 y.o import. This implies ANY car. So if you see an evo in Australia, or an RX7 series 6 import, then it'll be from a personal import (not unless there was some dodgy business going on Smile )

4. Race and Rally Use.
As it's name suggest. You can basically get any car for race and rally purpose, provided you've got a level 2 or 3 cams I think. So if you were to import an evo 7 for racing, then it'll be fine. You can't register them to be driven on the street though. That is strictly illegal.
Also, don't touch the chassis code plate and stuff like that. Despite how tempting it is to register an EVO as an aussie lancer, jus don't do it. You'll get thrown in prison if you tampar with it.

They are way better at explaining then I am Smile Smile

Urm, so yeah, that's about it...
Good luck.. Happy importing

ROCK ON.
