Stuffed alternator? Sat, 21 June 2003 05:42 Go to next message
Ok, well to start with its not charging, the battery isn't flat yet (the actual volt gauge in the cabin told me I had a problem), but when I get my trusty multimeter out I only get 11.7 volts so its only a matter of time before I run out of juice in the battery Mad

What exactly goes wrong with them? Stator / rotor issues or is it something that I can look at fixing myself (bushes)? (do they sell rebuild kits?)

Does a 7M alternator fit? I hear they have a larger current rating? What does everyone think I should do (can't really afford a couple of hundred Smiley $$?

Cheers
Wilbo

pull out the brushes and see if they are worn out (ie too small) if they are ok, then you need to check for cracked connections.

95% of the time, it's the brushes worn down. if you take the dismantled alt to an auto elec, they will usually replace the brushes for ya for maybe $10 or $20...
