Power vs Reliabilty Sat, 21 June 2003 13:28 Go to next message
Is there a limit to how much power i can get out of a 7MGTE before my reliabilty takes a hit?

Can i extract more power from the engine without sacrificing reliabilty in the long run?

I'm new, but it seems to me, the more power you can get from your engine, the more stress your engine will have to put up with, thus shorten it's life. Am i right?

That depends on the condition your engine is in.

ok well my engine has done 150,000k's and it's just had a new headgasket, needs an oil change and sounds a little rough (just got it a few days ago) would it be a bad idea to mod it for more power at it's age? or would that actually help it to run more reliable?

Generally, power up, reliability down.

Trying to get more power out of an engine with 150000k's plus would not be a smart idea. It all depends on the increase you are looking for. It all starts as a couple PSI more on the boost and then generally snowballs.

If you have plans to rebuild the motor in the short term (6-12 months). Then why not see how much it can take? But if it has gotta last a lot longer, then keep it standard.

Well, thats my opinion. I am sure others will have different opinions.

From my experience with the 7MGTE if the engine is on ok condition then do the mandatory "7mgte" things and then start modding for power.

My engine has got around 200,000kms on it and its happily pushing some decent figures. It's completly internally stock but i've done the necessary things to ensure engine life with the 7MGTE.

-Always run the red toyota coolant.
-Re-torque the head gasket to around 74ft/lbs.
-If your going to run more than about 12psi, get rid of the factory ECU.
-Check the tune of your engine at intervals after mods are performed and run a full load AF ratio of 12.5:1

Very impressive, your hualing 400+HP out of a 200,000+Km 7mgte engine!

Can you tell me what the "mandatory "7mgte" things" are? i should know these things, but i'm still learning.

I noticed the coolant in mine is the green stuff, is that going to affect the engine in the long run? the red toyota stuff is obvously expensive but worth it, what should i ask for when i go to toyota? Just ask for toyota coolant? or is there a special one for these engines?

Also what does AF stand for? i'm sure i'll kick myself when you tell me, just can't think right now what it stands for.

Thanx alot.
Chris

I assume by usual 7M things he means doing everything u can do avoid a blown head gasket....cause the 7m is very prone to doing so

Such as:

-Retorque the head to 74ft/lbs as Paul said above (some ppl replace the bolts with something else aswell dont they ?)
-Replace the gasket with something special, im sure Paul can recommend one
-Use the red toyota coolant.....just go to toyota and ask for the red toyota coolant.....theyll know which one your talking about
- properly warm up and cool down your engine each drive

AF = Air/Fuel ratio

anything else i missed ?

ok thanx,
i've been reading a supra website on reconditioning an engine, and it seems alot of work and money even if you do it all your self. would it be cheaper to buy a new engine replacement? or to reco your old engine? i'm pretty sure SSS automotive sells 7MGTE's for $1400 correct me if i'm wrong.

Also where in Australia can i get these ARP headbolts? and Metal headgaskets?
