Just got another RA23, help needed for engine restarting and transmission swap

After looking at it in the paper for three weeks I finally went out and fell in love with an immaculate RA23. The lady who owns it didn't really want to sell it as she loves it as well, and if it was at her place said she wouldn't, its currently at her folks.
Took some pics here

Questions are, its been sitting up on blocks for four years, so other then the obvious fluid changes etc, what will I need to do/check so it can get reg'd.
The other question is, my current RA23 is a manual, and I want to convert this new one as its currently an auto, so what will I need to look at changing. From what I've read it doesn't look like a mammoth job, but some expert opinions would be gladly appreciated.
Its not a desperate hurry, as I won't be picking it up until I've paid it off But I made sure I put a deposit on it so she won't sell it to anyone else

Holy crap dude
That looks so straight.
*As you said do all the fluids including brake because it would have sucked up water in that time.
*Battery will probably be stuffed so will need another one.
*If the hand brake has been on all that time the drums may be warped so the brakes will pulse.
*Check the plugs etc.
*The fuel will probably be dead but you might be lucky.
*Once you get it going you may find a few leaks because the gaskets will have dried out and it als looks like it has a few leaks already by the puddles on the ground.

for the manual conversion... you will need the following:
- W50 box
- Manual pedal box
- clutch master and slave cylinder (buy new)
- clutch hydraulic lines
- a clutch + pressure plate
that should be aboot it
good work on the car mate - she is worth a mint

you'll also have to disable the nuetral/park start switch wiring so it's starts regardless of whether you remembered to leave it out-of-gear or clutch-in.
also, you might want to get the radiator re-cored (or just flushed if you're brave) as all the gunk in the water will have settled and clogged up the core. While you're there - get the radiator repair dude to remove the trans-cooler stuff from the bottom header tank.
it's a straight looking car - what a find!
there's used to be an old lady near me who drove around at slow speed in a well looiked after blue mid 70's celica that looked 100% factory - i suppose it got sold at a some deceased estate auction ... ;(

Jason: you might want to check that some of the important hoses havn't gone brittle (e.g. top/bottom radiator hoses, fuel-in, heater).
also, its likely that the heater core under that dash is mildly clogged up - and the temp-control tap - fortunately under the bonnet - will probably leak upon use. You can adapt landcruiser heater taps for celica use - requires a new mounting hole and re-routing of one hose.

The car was in Kenmore (which is nearly ipswich) - i haven't seen a while now (it's home still looks maintained, but i never see lights or the car) - tho i haven't been looking for it (my RA40 keeps me kinda busy). It was a blue RA23, coupe, factory rims, intact chrome, bonnet vent-inserts intact...
looked a like a genuine "owned by old lady, driven once-a-month on sundays, one owner, original paint, ..."

Thanks for the response. I was talking to my brother on the whole auto->manual conversion, and he said I would need to replace the radiator as the way auto's and manuals do their cooling systems are different. Is this true, as I haven't seen anyone else say this in conversion topics

The radiator in an auto car will have a built-in transmission cooler in the bottom tank. Simply disconnect this when you convert to manual; there's no need to swap the radiator.

Hmm just been trough the process of getting my 23 reg, buy the way nice looking 23. Probs i found were hoses fuel, brake needed replacement, they become brittle, Uni joints get play in them, check your engine and gearbox mounts to see if the rubber has come away from the metal, lower ball joints may have developed movement, and check your rear cylnders for leakage. As for the auto to manual conversion, every thing you need looks has to been previously listed, but one thing to remember is that the auto box shifter opening in the floor sits about 1-2 inches further back that the manual and for the shitfer to bolt in you will need to open the hole up further foward. Dont frett, this can be done when the box is in, so you dont take to much out. Good Luck.
