They are quick, but are slow when they fall out of the vvtLi power band. They handle well, but could probably do with an LSD.

they handle well , brake Ok - but need more grunt ..
a TURBO is desperately needed to give it some midrange ontop of the vvti ..
And nods to LSD - while your at it - throw a driveshaft to the back and slot in an extra diff ..

i own a 7th gen, and it puts out ok, havent had any probs with it. Yeah the VVTI part is v.good, but its not too sluggish in low revs, just depends on what ur use to and how u drive really..
Its way more powerful than my old 5th gen (WRC) celi thats for sure...
Next time there is a meet i'll give u a peek. The car has lots of plastique on the inside, it kinda pisses me off a bit...but hey.

The new Celica's seem to be dogs at low revs...
They are one of the worst cars for vision aswell... You can't see s**t while driving, especially reversing...

don't know how much this relates to you but there was a new celica at the porcar day last week racing in GT production which is basically stock except exhaust, suspension and safety mods and he was lapping .5 sec slower around QLD raceway (long straights and not many corners) than this VY SS that had the same mods except side dump exhaust that was backfiring flames!
so yeah i was pretty proud of the little FWD Toyota

Ok, as a current owner here's my thoughts FWIW. I was originally torn between the 200SX, WRX and Celica, but my wife liked the Celica the best so that's what we got (grin). Performance is average below about 3000 RPM improving rapidly above that and sensational above 6000 RPM when the VVTL-i high lift/duration cam lobes come into play. The effect is somewhat like a turbo coming on boost. Driven to the max it is quite exhilarating and can give a good account of itself against others in its class. The 6 speed gearbox is a delight to use, handling is good and the brakes work fine. Visibility is good except for the rear quarters and the spoiler does protrude into the rear view. However with properly adjusted side mirrors you get used to it fairly quickly and don't notice it much. Fuel consumption is excellent both around town (around 9.5 l/100kms) and on the highway (around 7 l/100kms) although it does require premium unleaded. The car is very comfortable on a long trip except that road noise can be intrusive on some surfaces. Tyre wear is very good my first set lasted 40,000 kms with regular rotation. Redbook shows average private sale price as $22,000 - $25000 for a late 1999/2000 model. Mine is now 2 years old and has done 50,000 Kms and has been very reliable apart from having the auxilliary drive belt tensioner replaced under warranty (a common problem). It has been serviced every 10,000 Km's by the dealer and I have always done intermediate 5000Km oil & filter changes myself. I always use Mobil 1 10W-30 oil which I consider mandatory for performance engines even though its expensive. I previously owned a 1995 6th gen Celica before this one. Would I buy another one? Probably depending on what the next gen is like when it comes out supposedly next year. Go take a test drive and see what you think.

*at least we didn't get 2zz-Fe's or something ghey like that*
The Goods:
- VVTL-i... tis COOL!
- 6 speed gearbox
- there is a "G" in the engine code
The Bads:
- It's Arse!
- Overly plastic interior (its the fashion these days tho!)
- FWD, with no 4WD option

Have you EVER looked out the back of an RA28??
Blind spots - you can't even CHECK them cos there is a lumping huge panel in the way. And as big as the rear window is... there is seriouly only 6" of vertical window! Even worse is that in Aus they only came with a drivers wing mirror standard

With Toyota's involvement in F1, they pulled out of all other motorsport including Le Mans and rally.
No need for rally car = no need for GT-Four.
Sad but true. I can't watch rally any more, it's just not the same without Toyota there.

the Gt4 name has been linked with the Caldina wagon in japan ( 3sgte awd wagon ) in recent months - but its still not a Gt4 ..
the Corolla could NEVER wear the gt4 badge - primarily cause they now have the SPORTIVO which has the celica motor in it anyway ..
the logical step from here - if toyota doesnt plan to kill the celica like it did the supra - AND loose all its sportscar loving public is to turbocharge or increase HP in the current celica - OR go AWD with the celica format and resurrect the Gt4.
there is NOTHING at current in the toyota line up to match the WRX and the EVO's , and as for the next step up - whats there - empty space as well!
hindsight is that toyota currently dont give a shit in australia about perfornamce image - their happy selling tarted up family movers with no extra go , or econoboxes with bodykits badged
" sportivo "
At least all the other car makers have done something to inspire some enthusiasm for product in recent years ( holden with the monaro - ford with its xr6 turbo and GT , Subaru with the B4 libertys and STI wrx's , mitsubishi with the " ralliart " magna + awd , and Evo etc ) - toyota - yAWN factor of 10 !
The corolla was never intended to be a sportscar - no matter HOW HARD they try with bodykits and adopted motors - the celica - Mr2 and Supra are toyotas Flagship Sportscars
before anyone goes " well what about the corolla rallycar " well it STILL had adapted celica running gear in it - Exactly like the current one campaigned by neal bates .. Under that corolla shell - is the heart and drivetrain of a St205 WRC celica GT4..
id prefer to go out and spend $25K on an old GT4 - or MR2 - or supra that i know has the go , the looks , and the image to back it up , then buy a plastic fatastic that mum can look sporty in driving to the shopping centre, or to pick up kids
end rant - and LONG LIVE pre 1998 Toyorta sportscars !

Toyota (Australia) has definitely forgone the boyracer image. I think they are really focusing on the middle to older age generation i.e. with the sportivo camrys and corollas.
Gone are the day of Supras/turbo MR2s etc...
Guess it is their marketing ploy - but hey, they are getting sales.. and that's all that counts !
What conversions can I do for a corolla csi by the way? (grandma ones!!)
