fully charged battery flat the next morning Tue, 24 June 2003 07:10 Go to next message
Whats going on? my battery was so flat the led clock wouldn't even display. I charged the battery up on a charger put it back in the car and it would start fine, took the car for a drive to get the alternator to charge it abit more, made sure nothing was left on when i turned the car off. Next morning completly flat again. What could be draining the battery if it's swithed off?

I also noticed in my fuse box that 2 of those chunky fuses with the clear plastic lids on top have blown and look pretty rusty inside. One fuse is for ALT(for the alternator i presume) the other fuse is CDS(whats CDS?). They were like that when i got the car, i don't think they are the problem as the battery going flat started happened just in the last few days.

I had the same problem with my Soarer last week. When the ALT (alternator) fuse is blown its no longer charging the battery when you drive around so things like lights, stereo etc are draining it constantly. Its probably gotten to the stage where the battery is just cactus and you'll need to replace it. I had to solder my alternator fuse together in the interim just to get the car started til my 120 amp replacement gets sent from Melbourne! (stupid import crap)

Replace both the ALT fuse and the battery and you should be back in business!

No idea what CDS is though sorry

Have you tried turning the car off and checking how much current is being drained with it off?

Also, it could be that your battery is gone. You got access to another battery to try out overnight?

best thing is to check all the obvious stuff first
is the altinator charging
does the regulator require replacing
is the battery holding charge
is there constant current draw from the battery
is your ignition switch turning all the way off, as it may be worn from age and usage!!!

justin

just check out all this sorta stuff first

Thanx for the advice guys.

So far from what i have tried, yes it's draining when it's switched off.

But also the fact that when i buaght the supra the ALT fuse was blown all along, perhaps the guy i buaght it off just sold it with a new battery to make out all was fine with the car. That could indicate i have a serious electrical problem if the alt fuse keeps blowing.
will carry out the other things you all mentioned.

Thanx again.
Chris

Well, with blown fuses basically theres no connection between the alt and battery. Wouldnt that be the case? No electrical connection between the 2 would mean theres no charge.

I dunno if its different but I hooked up my car stereo and with a blown fuse, my amps dont work coz its dead where the fuse is.

Also u say it keeps blowing fuses, so if thats the case u got a short somewhere, so check for live electrical wires hanging on their own and exposed.
