Engine lean? Tue, 24 June 2003 10:25 Go to next message
Whats the go with Toyota engines leaning toward the passenger side of the car?
The 2T does this in the TA22 and this is also the case in many other Toyota's.

Anyone have an explanation for this? Confused

my 2T didn't lean anywhere in my TA...it sat upright!
unlike the 4K in my old KE55....

the 4A in my TA now leans a slight bit to the passenger side like the sprinter should. only a little tho.

it has to do with getting the oil back into the sump.

Thats why the idiots at Dellows sent me a Dellhousing that puts the engine square (well as square as they could make it..) behind the engine = shifter on silly angle. Twisted Evil

All the 2T's sat on a lean from the factory. If your engine isnt on a lean then your passenger side mount isnt sitting all the way down Confused
Or you have something that is bent Rolling Eyes

actually, in the K series, if they are upright, the oil drains back better, as the drain is next to the sparl plugs on the drivers side. i have heard no solid reasons why they have a lean, but suggestions include.
-easier to access dizzy, spark plugs and oil filter.
-safer in accident as the passenger gets dested instead of the driver.
-weight distribution, more even with only driver.
-the intake port angle thing, it angles up in the head, but if the manifold angled upwards it'd go thru the bonnet with an aircleaner, so the engine is tilted?

fwiw, TOSCO sold kits for K motors to mount them upright. their reason to mount upright? more room for sidedraughts and extractors and also much faster oil drainage to the sump. (twin dellorto 40's Very Happy )

kits included:
engine mounts, sump, oil pump and pickup, manifold stay, intake and exhaust manifolds, and bellhousing from a K motor to T box that removed the 15-20 degree tilt, so engine and box were aligned straight.

the kits were a few thousand back in the early 70's Shocked
