Cheap and easy(read bodgy) option:
Ingredients
1 tin of plastic etch primer
1 roll of masking tape, 25mm wide
1 tin of touch up paint(matched to your car)
1 sheet of wet and dry paper
1 newspaper
Method
1)go down to local Super Cheap store and buy plastic etch primer, masking tape and touch up paint to match your car(paint code on compliance plate).
2)grab yesterdays newspaper and the masking tape and cover area around mirror housing.
3)DONT FORGET TO MASK THE MIRROR!!!!
4)clean dead bugs and other crap from mirror housings.
5)LIGHTLY sand housing surface to help paint adhesion.
6)spray with etch primer
7)have a beer/coffee/smoke etc while it dries
Coolspray with three to five LIGHT coats touch up paint
9)have a beer/coffee/smoke etc while it dries
10)remove masking and admire your wonderful handy work.
Note: dont cut or polish for two weeks. paint has to fully set otherwise youll never get a shine.

Painless option:
ingredients
1 tool kit
approx $120 cash

method
1)remove mirrors from car
2)take mirrors to local pannel shop and give them your paint code
3)collect at agrred time (can vary from 1 day to "what mirrors?")
4)refit mirrors to car
5)stand back and admire your handy work

good luck

Hey
thanks jimmyd for a great response.I like the sound of trying to do it myself. It will fill in an afternoon nicely.Hopefully I will be able to get some good results and it will feel better because I did it heheheWhat do you mean by bodgy?
Did you spray your mirrors jimmyd, and if so how do they look after a bit of wear.
Or did you take the painless option?and pay someone to do it

I applied the term bodgy because many people seem to think any paint work not carried out in pristine, dust free shops and applied in a spray booth to be just that(didn't want a posting bun-fight because I didn't tell you to stand on your right foot and spit over your left shoulder while spraying). I have sprayed abs plastic using this method for many years with no problems, 1 set of mirrors now into their 12th year and look schmick. I would strongly recommend you try doing it yourself, it is the only way to learn. Besides, you just can't beat the feeling after a successful job.

Hah hah ... I just did mine 2 weeks ago ... doh! hehehe

Talk about dodgy ... I took even a shorter way by just buying a $2 spray can from Supercheap Auto and respraying both the grille & side mirrors on my AE86. Mine you, it was all in gloss black so it was more of a touch-up.

My only piece of advice is to hold the spray can further away (like the 30cm recommended distance). I sprayed a bit too close & the paints gone thick on one side of the grille where I've held it too close. Didn't realise it till later. Apply coats in moderation & build it up rather than all at one go.

The other problem is finding a way of holding up the mirrors so that the paint don't run when it's drying. Hence make sure it's a thin coat you apply each time.

Apart from that, all else looks fresh ... now the rest of the car looks like in dire need of a respray ... ho-hum ... my 2 cents worth for the day ... Smiley =

Thanks again jimmyD
I am going away for a week to the snow Laughing Nod Charlottes Pass. But when I get back I cant wait to give it a go, remembering to take my time, with careful even strokes of the spraycan from a good distance he he When it is all over, I will put up pictures of how it looks. Cant wait Shocked
