Changing bellhousing Wed, 25 June 2003 10:06 Go to next message
Okay, this is probably a REALLY stupid question, but I don't know the answer so I must ask...

I'm changing the bellhousing on my T50 (from the T to the A), and when I took the old bellhousing off I noticed it has a bit of a gasket between it and the gearbox... Do I need to get a special gasket to put the new bellhousing on? Is it a generic T50 one? Or do I cut one out of gasket paper? Or just use gasket goo? Anything I should watch out for when changing the bellhousing (apart from gear oil everywhere...)

Thanks

You dont need a gasket between the bellhousing and the box.

I don't? Wouldn't the gearbox oil leak out from between the bellhousing the the box (through the bearings)? When I loosened the bolts that hold the bellhousing to the box the leftover oil that hadn't been drained out yet all came out...

The bellhousing is held to the gearbox by a whole lot of bolts right? With the bellhousing off, I can see the bearings for the main input shaft, and another one below it. These are not sealed, and the shield comes off... And the gearbox oil comes right through the bearings, so came out of the gap between the gearbox and the bellhousing when I loosened the bolts...

Hmm... I have no idea either...

fook, i'd imagine gasket paper AND gasket goo would do the trick.

maybe give toyota a call and see if there is a gasket listed or drop by bursons and see if they have a listing...
