what are you loking to have the alarm do ?
500 these days will get you a top of the line job with central locking kit installed ..
I had a black widow one with the central loking kit + ultrasonics installed - at the time - about 2 years ago - it cost me about 420
Recently had another alarm installed in my GT4 - Its a rhino unit - that hooks also into the central locking + attepts to bypass the turbo timer so the engine running on warmdown wont set it off. This cost me 330 installed - and is up there with the best of them ..
Budget for about 400 intead for the ta22 - and spend the extra 100 or so on a rear Swaybar - youll be happier with the $500 spent that way

Brant are supposed to be quite good, and some insurance companies give a discount on your premium if you have one installed.
There a bit expensive though for what you get.

Brant for the cressida:
The cost of a AA02/446A 3 point immobiliser + alarm is $648 fully installed incl GST.
This includes battery back siren, internal second siren, ultrasonic movement detectors, and an impact sensor to detect window and door lock attack.
The cost of adding the 4 window glass lift is $225.

Hello,
Similar to Speaka, I'm also looking at a Brandt alarm. Something inbetween the AA02A and the Nemisis. Probably around $1000, but it has the lot.

Got a Tistonics alarm in my MX83 last week. Cost $550 installed, has inbuilt turbo timer (top of the priority list) two point immob, central locking management, black wiring (Aust standard), glass break/shock detection, Anti hijack etc. Pretty happy except the arming chirp is very loud and you cannot switch to silent arming... Do your research before buying!!!
If your car is turbo I was recommended to get an inbuilt TT as with a conventional TT hooked up it is venerable to interception to bypass the alarm from the ignition.

Just find out EXACTLY what you want then research the alarms available from places in your area. Also be aware of cost of things like replacement remotes etc.
500 is a good goal for an installed alarm.
The guy at autobarn would recomment the mongoose ($400 + $100 for install) which includes central locking control, he recommended me that because all the insurance companies approve it.
I know RACQ approve it if the immobiliser is passive arming.
The alarm in my car is a cobra, and does central locking, ultrasonics, backup siren, immobiliser, but when i had to get a replacement remote, only 1 place in brisbane does em, and cost me $105 because they had to send my existing remote to victoria or some shit. I reckon if it was a more popular alarm, it would have cost 1/2 as much.

Well that must have changed recently, when I got mine done it was pre 1985 vehicles and this only applied to certain model alarms.
They will fit their immobilisers to anycar. So I simply said I had a 1985 model........sweet!

the most important thing on my side is that it has a 3 point immobiliser.. my insurance company wont recognise anything less.
should i put a turbo timer in before getting the immobiliser/alarm installed, or should i see if the alarm install dude will put it in? will it make it more secure?

Yes, unfortunately the jaycar equators are single point immobilisers. You can be VERY senaky with these, of course, but insurance companies tend to like more. The main problem I found with the jaycar alarm was the thin diametre of the wiring, it's pretty crappy. Too small to use reliably in red crimp connectors. I'm not sure what the wiring on other brands is like, maybee a lot of them are like this. But I you're installing an alarm, I recommend soldering everyhting anyway. Also, I find it annoying that you only have to hold the lock button down a fraction of a second too long to swap from silent to beeps, which is pretty annoying. Apart from that, it's fine.
Jaycar DO now sell a proper approved immobiliser with black wiring etc that you can get an alarm upgrade module for, looks good.

The shadow immobiliser does look good... looking at the catalog now.
129.50/116.95 (trade discount)
alarm upgrade kit is
79.50/71.50
So comparabale with the non-paging Equator alarm (199/178.95)
If you are competent, I think DIYing would be more secure... the pro installers probably do every car the same predicatble way. If you do i yourself, you can really take the car apart and run the wires how you like, hide the box where you like... etc etc
