I think an Austeyr F-88 rifle wouldn't go far astray... or at least a glock. I'm taking preventative measures at this point in time, and I'm hoping this won't happen again.

The kit (as in the bodykit?) will be going on at or roughly the same time as when the engine gets swapped.
I have no idea how to build my own website, nor have I the time right now, nor do I know anyone who could do the honours for me A guy from the Netherlands rather graciously donated some webspace for my last ride, a Mitsubishi Scorpion, because he host a Mitsubishi site. I don't know anyone like that who will do one for a RAV4. Do I see a show of hands?
Thanks for the good feedback, FNK11Y.

first things first, VERY disappointed to hear that the little baby got violated... as a rav owner it makes my blood boil to hear such things. i busted a guy opening my car door IN MY FRONT YARD and ran out of the house like a crazy woman asking him wtf he was doing. "i just wanted to look, its nice" was the reply. "thanks, but f off" was mine.
good to hear ur gonna deck the car out with security, its one of those things we all hate paying for, but realise how important it is all 2 late. the peace of mind afterwards tho is always worth it.
cant wait till the huj changes on the car take place ! keep us posted

Hi dude...
I noticed you from the RAV4World forums. Nice to see a second RAV4 dude found the ToyMods arena. Thinking of becoming a member too?
Security is already decked-out in the RAV4 now - on top of the factory immobiliser and central locking, it has internal motion sensors, glass break sensor, 130dB alarm and a separate 120dB internally-mounted Piezo screamer, and an extra immobiliser added, also with provisions for power window lift option and turbo-timer cutout activation. Not bad for $500 so far.
Enjoy ToyMods... it's a great site and there's lots to do with meetings and cruises, etc. A great crew.

So your from Ballina??
I lived up there for a few years (1985-2002) and it's a great place to live. Well now i'm in the middle of no where getting my car killed by stones, cows, kangaroos and thick thick mud. Maybe I should trade the Soarer in on a RAV4 too. I wouldn't be able to keep mine as clean as yours but it would be better suited to the outback than a Soarer.

Oh I kept on reading to see your in Sydney now.
When you were up north did you ever see that purple 3 door Rav? I saw it a few times in Lismore. It had mesh 18" wheels and lots of yellow touches. It was the lowest 4WD i've ever seen. I don't know how they drove it. Must have had some serious guard work done.

I worked in Lismore for a few months, and did martial arts there for more than three years I lived up in that area... and I never once saw a RAV4 that came close to being like mine. Would've liked to have seen one though...
Anyway, got pics of my installed brake system (front only), which are the DBA Longlife Gold series cross-drilled & slotted rotors, and front pads which are Bendix Performax, which some sites say not to use with slotted rotors because of the extended bed-in time, but I've found no problem with them so far.

Cheers Ben.
But wait - there's more!
Got the new gearknob put in, some of you may have seen it on Dyno Day... similar to my last one, it's an Isotta too - but this one has a rubber grip ring around it.
This handbrake kit was a tad trickier to install than the last one, as it's better designed incorporating the grip and the boot into one piece, however it's not that easy to get the button set just right.
My old handbrake boot (Italian leather) is up for sale.
I also got a new mascot sitting in my car for show 'n' shine days and such... Jackie Camel.
Looking suspiciously like his owner with the karate uniform on (including the black belt), and even the goatee too.
I'll hopefully have the seats installed for the next phase of mod's.

I did another minor mod this time, but still damn effective, and cheap too!
I decided to change over the rather dim looking front parking lamps. Here you can see what they looked like (from front-on LEFT), and what they look like now (RIGHT).
The old clear globe on the left, and the oddly-shaped new blue globe, that gives out a surprisingly white light, on the right.
An up-close look at the new lamp in it's housing, VERY white.
And what my ride looks like now. Notice on the right side of the pic, the wall that my RAV is parked next to actually reflects the brightness of the light now installed. Fat chance of this happening with stock globes. These are wedge-connector globes, only $16 from Motoquipe (that's right, Ricer-Heaven )
More coming soon...

Damn, you gotta be quicker than that dude... nothing was said when the undercar neon's went on. That's INSTANT RICER qualification.
Finally got the hood struts installed yesterday, after 2 failed attempts with wrong pressure/torque sizing. Using 200Nm gas struts, the problem is now solved. Don't have to use the bonnet-prop anymore either. Always wanted a car with hood struts, just a hankering - one thing I always wanted to have.
Some install pics...

Sweet - How much did the parts cost you for that?
That's a cool little mod I reckon.. Not aimed at looks or performance, just a little something to make the car a bit more the way you want it.. (mind you - you might want to paint the metal brackets that mount the struts to the bonnet.. the silver sticks out like a sore thumb!! )

Yeah I know the bracketry does kind of stick out, but I have a solution for it - anodising. They're alloy and can be anodised to match some of the interior parts, eg. steering wheel centre, gear shift collar, etc.
Parts, labour and fitting (I got to know the guy fitting them, good bloke), $75. He's even making kits up for other pre- and post-2000 RAV4's (different bonnets) with my help. We're doing specials for people on RAV4World.com.

The new seats went in today... just posting a summarised version of the install pics, more available on request.
I'm riding taller in the saddle now, and the pedals feel like they're a mile away. It feels like it's a different car to drive, but I'm going to adapt and get used to it.
Hope you like it.

Last weekend I ventured up the North Coast once more to partake in the outdoor car show event that last year won me a trophy. With my RAV4 looking very ordinary this time last year, a LOT of stuff had been done to it in time to make it for this year's event. As expected, word had got out that the Asian vehicle category was an open doorway for virtually anyone with a modified rice-box to enter, as I'd done last year and basically been awarded a trophy for getting out of bed and showing my ride. There was 4 times the amount of competition there this year, yes that's right... 4 Asian cars (count 'em...) were in the judging for the trophy. A trophy would have been a bonus to me, but the main reason I went up there was more for exposure and to let everyone know that HAD known me with the RAV4 before I moved to Sydney, that it was getting to be something to take seriously. A lot of people took notice of it and admired it rather openly, even though I didn't take home another trophy. A Nissan 180SX took that home, although if I'd had a stereo system with some custom checkerplate in the back end, it would have been a close decision. They were really the only differences.
Anyhow, before the car show, my dad and I went to work on the ram-duct install to assist the cold air intake with better breathing.
We removed the resonance chamber (the last remnant of the stock airbox system) from behind the bumper. It takes up a surprisingly large amount of usable space that can be used for ram-ducting.
A portion of the bumper was cut out, as the bashplate attached to the grille-guard was taking up the other available space, and I didn't want to cut that part out.
After the cut-out hole, the mesh-covered speaker port, masquerading as a ram-duct entry flange, was installed.
The tube was hooked up to the entry flange with a 3" hose clamp.
What the flange looks like now, installed on the bumper.
The tube was run up through the engine bay, behind the left headlight. This is where it got a bit squeezy. Part of the tube had to be slightly flattened (oval shaped) to accommodate some of the wiring that was there, and the headlight connectors. The tube runs in behind the indicator/parking light assembly with no worries.
After the last part of the tube (the exit side) was zip-tied into place, the K&N filter was replaced and the setup now complete. The idea behind this is; because it's not a direct suck-through system (like on an ordinary 4WD with a snorkel), the air has to be drawn up from somewhere so the intake can get at it and draw more in on demand. The principle behind this matches the needs of the CAI at virtually any speed. The air is pushed in through the flange at speed, driven up the tube where it exits into the heatshield area, which is closed off to the rest of the engine bay. The cooler outside air taken up through the tube first hits the intake temperature sensor before being sucked up by the filter. The ECU then controls the engine's A/F settings to combust the mixture with cooler, more dense air, making for more a more complete burn, better responsiveness and better economy.
I'm glad this part is out of the way, as it solved the 'where to put it' problem that existed for months before I attempted it on the weekend. Credit goes to my dad as well, who helped out a lot with it. Next on the to-do list is a replacement fuel filter... these babies last 80,000 km's before changing over.

Cheers guys... If I try to get a temp reading from the heatshield (where the cool air goes), compared to the rest of the engine bay, I have to have two separate temperature sensors attached to different parts of the engine bay. I've looked around to find something with a two-probe application, but found nothing so far. Everything I find is one sensor in the readout unit, and one probe on a 3 metre cable. I have had my hand in the engine bay between one side and the other after a half-hour, and the difference is something like between 15 - 20°C cooler in the heatshield.
Scotty, are you looking for something like mine or something more expensive, like Sparco or Momo?

Unfortunately there's a distinct difference between 'cool' and being a stand-out. Hell my car doesn't even qualify through the entry criteria of Summernats... the scrutineers would tell me to piss off home again. Pompous self-righteous pricks. And being a broke-ass doesn't help a bit - I still gotta pay out $$$ for my little indiscretion with another dropkick's XR6 ute and then get MINE repaired as well, then the rego is due next month too... that's bound to be near $700. There's not much more going to be done on my ride till near Xmas time I reckon, which is why the mods are in hiatus-mode right now.

I have been following this build as I have been thinking about modifying a RAV4 for quite some time now. I would much rather the short wheelbase 2 door though but as my g/f is on my back about wanting another kid, that will take the total from 1 to 2 so a long wheelbase might be better for the space side of things. What size are the original wheels??? Do you know any RAV4 forums that I could visit??? I have about 5 years to build up my little AE92 seca and buy a RAV4 before I will be on a long trip to Queensland with 1 possibly 2 kids so I still have a little bit of time on my hands.

Hey,
The size of the original wheels on the RAV4 is 16" x 6.5". If you modified the wheels and tyres, I wouldn't go anything bigger than 18" if you want comfort in the driver's seat, and some longevity out of the treads.
Visit RAV4World.com - it's the ONLY place on the web to visit for the most comprehensive info on EVERY RAV4 ever made from April 1994 to the new 2004 RAV's. I'm one of the two senior moderators on the site, and the only international moderator. Most of the people there are US-based (including the site), but there are roughly around 100 RAV4 people registered from Australia. But there's always room for one more.
Hope to see you there soon. What model RAV4 (pre-2000 or 2001-on model) would you look to get?

I'm a bit torn over what to do next actually... I could get the dash kit installed, or get the windscreen (chipped to the shithouse) and driver-side door glass (scratched on the inside) replaced, get the rear swaybar fitted up, etc... they all cost about the same amount to do, except the windscreen and driver's door glass - that's running around $600 to replace, just so I can have a better looking windscreen and a window tint for the driver's side that doesn't stand out like dog's balls on a cat.
What would you do next?

All the time, and it's not just Asian's either. It holds quite a bit of cosmetic value to everyone that comes close to it in their cars eg. to and from work. I get so many people wanting to race me off the lights that it's not funny anymore. I had a BMW 525i try to burn me off tonight, but I stayed level with him all the way through the gears till 4th. I'm surprised he didn't crack the shits and zoom off in a huff. Getting beaten (or levelled) by a mechanically-stock (except CAI) RAV4. That's dispicable.
I've also had a couple of guys (one leb and the other greek) roll down their windows and compliment me on my good work so far. Also one Italian (as judged by the plate he had "ITALYN" in a WRX) also gave me the big thumbs-up. I must be doing something right...

The brakes are DBA discs (I believe)... They can be sourced from one of our club sponsors, Pittwater Brakes...
Cold Air intake refers to the intake piping that runs from the front bar straight to the pod filter... It gets cold air from the front bar while cruising along and goes straight into the filter (or airbox) and then into the motor... The heat shield on Andrews car is just an added extra to keep the warm air from getting sucked into the motor as it does nothing for performance at all...

Thanks for taking the time to read it from start to here, Matt. I live in Miranda, and no I don't go near Richmond usually, except on a cruise.
Now you can appreciate what it's like trying to modify one of these bitches... no one makes popular aftermarket parts for it, and everything usually has to be custom-made. It adds personality to it and the satisfaction to know that no one will ever have a car like yours, but it's far from the convenience of bits 'n' pieces like you'd find for WRX's and Accord's and Civic's. Because no one usually will take the time and effort (let alone $$$) to modify a RAV4. They'll usually go for something simpler. How boring. If I wanted to mod-up any car I'd have gone for a Celica and the project would be complete by now. But I'd just look like another modifier in the ever-growing crowd, not individual by doing something different. This gets noticed even now, and it's still not complete. Probably because I took the time and effort to do the cosmetic's and a few of the performance goodies first, and save the rest of the big stuff for last. Provided all goes well with my new job, next year will be the year when she'll see the modification finish-line.

After registration is through at the end of this month, I'll be back on the modification trail, rear swaybar and new front and rear mudflaps will be high on the cards. The stock rear mudflaps look like shit on my ride, and they're starting to fade too. Revolution Racegear sells the material to make new ones - all you have to do is cut out the shape you want and fit it up. The rear of my ride will use up the maximum width (300mm) of the mudflap material, and I haven't decided on what to do with the front just yet, but it will definitely be wide.
The rear swaybar will come from K-Mac, and I think I'll also have the front swaybar's bushes replaced with Nolathane. That will be November's mods (so far...)

Hey dude. Well I told you hat I was considering buying a RAV4 as the family expands. I went and had a look at a 97 model and I was beyond impreessed. It was sitting on a 5 spoke 16" rim and lookes great so I am now very much considering selling my seca and buying one of these. I have been looking at an article on a RAV4 sitting on 20" rims with a 255/35 rubber and has been lowered 4 inches. It still sits pretty high so I might go along this sort of path.I am very very impresse with them but am yet to take one for a drive. Should happen soon. The guy had $17000 on this one but said the price was very negotaible so I will see what happens. You might have a fellow RAV4 modifyer on here if things go to plan.

Great to see you're impressed with the RAV4. A word of caution however... if you do decide to stick 20" rims on it as well as dumping it 4" (like has been shown on a RAV4 MAX Limited Edition in the Hot4's mag, issue 93, page 107), you're in for a rough family ride. It's dangerous what has been done to that RAV4, not only has it got huge-ass rims on it, but the springs are most likely coil-binding from being compressed a further 2" over their initial 2" drop in height. You'd want a comfortable ride on your RAV if you lowered it, and I'd see no reason to go past a 2½" drop in suspension, and 18" rims will still look very impressive. Not only this, but your rubber will wear a bit longer than with 20's on it.
Some things to mull over with your prospective RAV4 modifications. Also get onto RAV4World.com for heaps more ideas on what can be done with RAV4's.

Well I went to the motor show in syd today and was having a look around then I saw it. It was a huge shiny 22" chrome rim on a 45 profile rubber and it got me thinking, hmmmmm I wonder if I could fit a set of them on a RAV4. I have seen a 22" rim on a vitara so surely it could be done. I also was taken back by a few new colours and was very impressed with the new metalic yellow colour on the beast of a MG for those that seen it and once again, it got me thinking, what would a 96 RAV4 on a rim size somewhere avove the 19" mark, a full BOMEX bodykit, a GT4 bonnet vent, lowered 4 inches with a body colour in that yellow look like. Makes me think alot.
Hey, do you happen to know what issue of hot4's the green RAV4 is in witht the camel airbrushed on it is in??? I have a pile of car magazines over 1 metre high and I cant find the mag with that RAV4 in it. Any ideas???

That Green Rav4, CRYPT, was written off a few years back... A Semi ran a red light and slammed straight through the side of the car ...
I'm not too sure what issue though...

I had a drive of a 97 RAV4 today after work and I am well beyond impressed. The are very smooth and fun to drive. The clutch was amazing and it certainly had alot more balls than my seca. Great sounding sterio for a factory item. They are very comfy and a pleasure to drie. I am very seriously looking at buying one of these and getting rid of my little seca. My seca doesnt have air-con or power steering and to drive the RAV4 with both was just amazing.
