Good customer service: i.e. quick response to all mediums (phone, e-mail, fax, mail)
Knowledgable Staff: It helps when people don't tell you your car doesn't exist (I've been told that by a wrecker)
Good range of Second-hand parts: I bought an A'PEXi boost gauge second hand for a decent price, had a good range (think Hikari)
Support the local guy: There are a lot of Aussie products that are worth a mention (Celicamad's boost control for one)
Decent prices: I'm sick of companies that charge you lots because they can.
Decent freight: eg. Japanese Motorsport charged $200 for freight from Adelaide to Perth for engine, gearbox and wiring...Adelaide Jap charge like $350 for an engine alone.
Basically, if you think along the lines of good customer service, and realistic prices, you're more likely to win respect and repeat custom.

How about some intelligent mod bits, like suspension components that actually make your car handle better and not just lower and rougher.
I agree with Frank, there is some really good stuff made in Oz, there is plenty of other shops that sell imported toys.

I want the good old days when:
- a 15 year old girl didn't give me a blank stare when I asked for an R clip or an M7 x 1.00 nut,
- a goofy looking, multi earringed fucktard didn't even bother looking for the half inch welch plugs but still manages a "Nah mate, we don't seel them here",
- I didn't get offered some fake bonnet pins because "we don't stock the real ones...",
- where an Autometer 11K rpm 5" monster tacho with 100W shift light was not the pinnacle of instrumentation, and
- you'd buy neons at an amusement park.

No. There was a day when 15 year old girls didn't work in 'performance stores' and I wasn't made to feel like a sexist asking if I could talk to someone who knew what I wanted.
15 year olds of either sex have no place in a true performance store.

I agree with a lot of Gianttomato's comments.
I'd also like to see people who have at least half an idea about what they're trying to sell, and I'll add a few things to that.
my wants :
*people will get the catalogues out and go through them when they're there on the shelf. not just chuck their hands up in the air because I've asked about something other than a WRX or skyline.
*people will actually get parts in when they say they will.
it's easy enough to take a deposit if you think the part will cause you hassles. I'm always willing to leave a hundred or so to show I'm serious.
one shop is on pretty thin ice with me as they've stuffed me around on three separate occasions now when I've tried to order things from them. all of my mates have washed their hands of the place,I'm only hanging in there because they're the only place in Sydney that has access to the gear I'm after atm.
*people will be honest and fair. give you all the options, and let you decide which you want. not start with the most expensive, and reluctantly work their way down to the good value part after you hassle for something else.
"Hi,I'm after a boost gauge"... "ok,we have the defi electronic units, they are $700." "umm..anything else? how about the VDO units in that catalogue on the shelf?" "nah mate, you want THIS one... it's what EVERYONE is putting in"...
*parts shops that are just that. for buying PARTS. not sik jackets, videos of half naked girls at "car shows",neon lights,
stick on pedals, and plastic chequer plate floor mats.
I want to see tools, oils and the like, and rows of parts behind the counter.
I want to be able to go into a shop, say hello to the bloke behind the counter, and then ask for a part with the proper name, and get back a price, and availability. not a blank look, and a duck out back to ask the one guy who can speak english, and knows more than where the blue headlight globes are on the shelves. I don't expect an answer of the top of the guy's head, but I do expect them to at least look stuff up.
if I wanted to be fucked around,I'd go into a big service station.
used parts would be nice to see,but they're really a conflict of interest, and are hard to warrant. I think you need to do one or the other. new or used.
that's it for now...
Justin...

How about a shop that says that they are too busy to take your call and will call you back soon, AND ACTUALLY CALL YOU BACK !
I know some of these places are busy, but I've made countless calls to various shops who assure me they will call me back ASAP and I never hear from them again (even if I call them back to enquire).

Mate, when I read this thread I feel at home. I hate having to edumacate the said 15 y.o fucktard (I actually had never heard that before but I LIKE it) as to the difference between the part that I want and the part that he is trying to sell me, and then just after I think that he gets what I am saying, his superior fucktard comes and tries to tell me the same shit that I jsut heard.
Definitely the salesperson must be knowledgeable about the parts that they are selling.
Must sell performance parts (like clear tail lights for my ful sik Lancer will not be needed).
Would be ideal if the staff drive performance vehicles, like a Hyundai Excel fitted with a mother of a turbo and a front mount intercooler.
Most importantly, if they don't have the part, they know what you are talking about (provided the description is clear) and get the catalogue that is relevant, and can order it in, or direct you to another supplier that may be able to help.
This all sounds like a tall order, but it can (and occasionally does happen). I love it when someone tells me that they don't carry the part that I am after, but here's a number and ask for so and so. They will always get repeat business from me.
