Tomorrow my engine is getting a semi rebuild, well the beginnings of one anyway and im going to check the bottom end out if i pull the pistond out i was wondering if any of the higher compression pistons fit without any valve clearence issues. Do they even fit on at all? are they the samt sized piston? fit on the same connecting rod?
thanks
Daniel.

No they won't fit as the 18rg pistons have a tall crown compared to the 18r which is a flat top.

arent there pistons with slight domes from an 18rg im sure ive seen them somewhere. they would raise the compression. or am i missing the point.

The 18rg has a hemi head , the piston crown sticks out of the top of the block and up into the combustion chamber , The head on the 18r has not got the hemi style combustion chamber and if the piston sticks out the bore any more than about .035" it will hit the head .

The dome would need to mirror the shape of the combustion chamber. For example have a look at a set of hi-kickers for a chev or ford motor.
Never seen any off-the-shelf ones for an 18R motor though. They would probably have to be custom made. Waste of time, might as well just get an 18RG.
If you want to raise compression, see how far you can safely shave the head

yup, spot on earlyrolla!
easier to shave 18R head (while watching out for valve-clearance issues) or bolt a turbo on it and grind out the head to lower compression (like i did).
you could also deck the block but once the piston crown starts to show, you run into the same valve-clearance problem.
If you go (potentially expensive) non standard pistons, make sure addesss any issues about gudgeon pins and balance if the custom jobs are different in weight to the std jobs.
the turbo's also an expensive route as you have to make lost of custom stuff. The RG's a cheaper route and it also has opportunities for hi-comp or turbo.
best-o-luck,
thechuckster.

thanks
