How much work to change an outer CV boot on an AE82 Mon, 01 July 2002 06:44 Go to next message
I've got an outer CV boot which needs replacing on my AE82 twin cam.

Just wondering how much work is involved in changing the thing, I understand the drive shaft must be removed but am unsure how easy/difficult it is to do this and if I need any specialist tools.

I only just bought the car so I am yet to get me a workshop manual but am intending to get one ASAP.

Any feedback/experience in doing the above would be appreciated.

It's a bit of mucking around just for changing a silly boot. Nod

I've had to do both sides. First the LHS then a week later the RHS also decided to split.

Which side do you have to change? With the LHS driveshaft I could get the driveshaft out by just undoing the wheel nut and the 6 nuts on the driveshaft to gearbox flange then push it clear of the threads on the gearbox flange. The RHS needed me to disconnect the control arm from the hub and swing the hub clear of the driveshaft. Not too much more work I guess.

Anyway once you have the driveshaft you have to take off a snap ring on the inner side. Remove the clamps on the inner boot and separate. Slide off the casing with the flange. Don't forget to mark the relation of the casing with the drivehsaft. You will now need to take off the tripod joint. Place a mark on the tripod and on the driveshaft using a punch or something similar so you can match them up when you put it back together. You need to tap the tripod joint off with a hammer. I used a brass drift so I wouldn't damage the joint. Once off you can take off the inner boot, then the outer boot and replace it remembering to pack it with grease and then put everything back together.

If you have any probs just give me a yell.

Thanks Matt

Stoopid question - Do you look at the car from the front or back to determine if its LHS or RHS? Anyway its on the drivers side - I assume that is the RHS which sounds like a bit more work...

should be less that $100 per side. i'd say more like $80, as i work in a mechanic workshop with my dad, and this is the price we quote for an easy car like an AE82 using a "Roadsafe" brand boot...

Yeah I was going to do it myself but I dont have time at the moment and it should be done sooner rather than later so I chucked it into the mechanics and it only cost $49 plus I picked up the boot from Auto one for $11 so all in all not too bad.
