I always thought it was illegal to have them on road cars, and found it strange that you could buy them in any kmart, but you can get new cars that have them? Whats the official ruling on these and does it vary state to state? Confused

I think the general concensus is that if they are firmly attached and they have an ample amount of rubber nodules then they are legal.

I was checking some of them out in Supercheap Auto the other day, they had cheap ones, and they were labelled "offroad use only", whereas some of their more expensive ones that were copies of the MOMO Tuning ones weren't. I'd assume that they were legal based on their construction also.

yeah, I've heard the whole 'offroad use only' line, which basically means, 'unregistered road cars.'

I wonder if these momo pedals have enough rubber on them

I'd say most of the MOMO range would, at least the ones that are aimed at road cars. Some of the all metal race pedals would be a different story though.

It just has to have a non slip surface. Which means any groved or roughened face.
I spoke to an engineer about this last week.
Alot of new pedals have a sandpaper surface just like on skateboards. Theres are perfectly legal for road cars.

I think (from hazy memory) that the ruling is they have to have raised sections for grip. This could mean either rubber OR metal, as long as it is enough to grip (pretty grey area i know)..

Some aftermarket pedals are completely smooth though, which look pretty cool but wouldn't be the safest thing in road cars.

On a side note, your accelerator pedal can be any construction you like, since it doesn't matter so much if your foot slips off that (compared to slipping off the brake for example!).

Oh, and in regards to the thing about being able to buy them in any K-mart or auto-shop or whatever... The law is, that it is the responsibility of the Vehicle Owner to make sure that any modification to the car is legal. It will never hold up that "it should be legal since you can buy it easily"..

edit - Thanks Cool1, I was too slow Razz

LOL yeah I know..

Nothing worse than something like that happening when you're racing someone.. I once had my gearknob come off in my hand on a particularly savage 1st - 2nd shift.. Only problem was I was racing a commydore at the time & had to try and get it back on in time for 3rd while keeping my foot buried into 2nd gear! Laughing

i bought some sparco "grip" race pedals for my ae86
$120 -SHIT i thought, a little exxy but hey, only the best for my ae86! Very Happy

at first they looked like just metal with holes in them
i was thinking , err how does my foot "stick" to it?....
then i found the pack of little rubber gripper grommets

and SHIT are these little bitches hard to put into the holes
has to heat the rubber up infront of my heater (toes got cold Sad ) and then push em through

but now they have all thes little grippy rubber pads
not bad in stickyness , and the look nice and new too

Hmmm dont know what the laws are. Ever checked out the pedels on a gti proton. They are metal, no rubber all they got are some grooves. The local cuntstable even tried to get me for a defect item on these pedels but because they were stock, ya know. So i think the case may be is that the pedels would not be deemed legel unless they met or passed ADR or tested for them or some shit like that.

As I said, they only need to have a non-slip surface! Which means they can be grooved, pitted or coated with a sand finish.

I replaced the stock rubber ones because THEY were too slippery. The replacements aren't expensive but they are metal with rubber gromets.
How are the stock ones supposed to be safe when your foot slips off them.

I got autotechnica one's and they are passed roadworthy.

I think they have to be firmly attached. some of them you can just put over the top of the original ones and they definatly aren't legal.
