Yes. More interesting was being in the car powered by that engine. I had never been perpendicular to the road at 100 kph uphill before.

Great article, thanks for the effort putting it together.

A lot of people seem to bag the 7M, or dismiss it cause it blows head gaskets, or spun big ends, etc. I haven't played with the JZ motors, but I realize they seem to have a good reputation.

But having worked on lots of motors before (admittedly lots of push-rod shit), I reckon people don't know how good they've got it. Its got a great 4 valve head, nearly bulletproof bottom end, AND unlike a lot of motors is very easy to work on.

Obviously there are better motors out there, but the M series is pretty good nonetheless.

As some of you may know i have a 4m, the pictures in that article show the 4m but my rocker cover is completly diferent
its flat on the top and has TOYOTA raised on the top with Lines going around it (looks good)

Re: Toyota 'M' Series History Tech Article Thu, 03 July 2003 09:00 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Yep, you have a post July 1976 4M (known as a 4MU). The MX13/23 was available till Sept 1976 here in Australia, so they had to fit a motor that would comply with ADR27a, hence the square rocker covered 4M. It's basically a Gen 3 4M. Corona Mk2's and Crown MS85's built from July 1976 have this motor.

The Gen1 4M had a 41030 head (with 9.2:1 CR, and slightly high topped pistons), gen 2 had 41032 head (with 'nipply' pistons -sounds XXX rated doesn't it - and 9.4:1 CR and more power). The Gen1 and 2 4Ms had a head that was bolted down by 14 large and 3 small head bolts, and the rocker assembly was bolted down to the head using 14 separate bolts. They also had a curved rocker cover. There are subtle port differences.
The Gen 3 4Ms (4MU and 4MEU - 4MEU not released in Australia) had flat top pistons, ultra low compression, and a square rocker cover. The head and rocker assembly are bolted together with the same 14 large head bolts (so to get the rocker assembly off, you have to undo the head bolts), and 4 smaller head bolts at the front. Again the ports slightly different. There was a significant power drop from the early to late motors.

Well the heads all nicely ported + the manifold and the extractors for nice air flow.

When i got it rebuilt they put in dish pistons or something anyway it made the compression go through the roof and they said we can leave it like that but you'll have to run it on AVGAS.
i said just get the same ones that where in it.

It's still high i HAVE to run it on ultimate98.
i dont mind its powerade for my engine Smile

From what i have learnt/read the 6mge shares the same block as the 5mge with the 7mge crankshaft.

The pistons and rings are early 5mge spec and the head is identical.

The intake plenum runners have a different shape and are supposedly larger in diameter. Ran no emissions due to being JDM.

The crank pulley is a combination of a 7mge and 5mge and is a prick to find a replacement (read: impossible). (7m center with 5mge outer)

Thats about it though.

Extra .2L is the main difference

7m/6m crank will NOT fit in a 5mge block Smile well, not without a bit of grinding.

oddly enough, the crank in the 6m is stamped 6m (der), whilst the 6m crank pulley nut is stmped 7m. then, on top of this, the early 7m's had a crank stamped 6m....

Heyaz Rob! Nice one man!

BTW - I'll get toyotatuner back up soon... promise! I might have to goto an outside server if the power keeps dropping out here damnit.

Anyway - owning a 5ME I can say that 115 HP is *severely* conservative. Havent had it on the rollers, but pushing a 2800 pound chassis through an auto trans (with over 300K on it) down the 1/4 in 17.2 is not 115 hp.

Also BTW - if *ANYONE* has info relating to 5MTE parts (manifold esp.) I'd like - I'm in process of designing the manifold for my 5M to hang the (T3?) turbo from a 300ZXT on there!

FINALLY!! w00t!

So Stef sent me this article, and I'm verrah glad to see a well-written history!

Tx d00d!
