icon5.gif  Cleaning Engines Wed, 02 July 2003 06:17 Go to next message
Okay, had a look at a couple of peoples engines in pictures lately, and looking at my 1GGTEU...its pretty feral! There is a LOT of built up gunk and grease everywhere.

What I was wondering is what you guys thought I should do to clean it. I've thought about using degreaser and a toothbrush and scrubbing brush, but I was wondering if there were any other solutions.

One other thing I thought of was maybe using oven cleaner? Would this be damaging to the block or anything? Its designed to the do the job, and on a brief inspection I can't see anything wrong with it.

Any other ideas guys?

Thanks,
Nathan

Four words!

Car lovers AND Air Brush!

I use their engine and tyre degreaser and it seems to work pretty well. Just be careful of your engine electricals, they don't really like getting wet Very Happy

My engine is out on an engine stand with the wiring loom off, so I figured I could be a little more abrasive as long as I'm careful with the electricals Razz

haha

well in that case i guess car lovers is out of the question Smiley =

I'm with you... go for the degreaser and toothbrush to clean the gunk off then if you can get your hands on an air compressor with a spraypaint can, fill that with degreaser also. Carby cleaner gets rid of gunk as well. I used that on my poor little laser before i sold it

it was so clean i felt like buying it off myself! Very Happy

if theres no battery connection you can go for your life cleaning it with a high pressure water cleaner... just make sure it dries out fully tho

or simply take of one peice at a time and clean it with degreaser, then rinse with water, then re-attach

but yeah, a rag or toothbrush should suffice

if your using water to wash the degreaser off make sure u attack all the electricals and dizzy with the air compressor, blow out all the plugs, and in the recess between the cams where the spark plugs are, water loves getting in there too.

So no one likes my idea of oven cleaner? The other benefit of it is that it only needs to be wiped off, not hosed...and it cuts through some pretty nasty grease!

I have one word for you, CarbieClean (I think that is what it is called).

it is a parts cleaner anyway, and safe to shoot down your throttle body to get all the junk behind the butterfly valve (correct me anyone if I am wrong, but I have done it before) Just have your engine running when you do that. You may have to hold your flow meter open a little though.

but I have used carbie clean for all my gunky metal parts and it works a charm

I use Mr Muscle... works a treat, as long as you're not too worried about the paint work. You can kiss things like under bonnet stickers goodbye. Make sure you use gloves, obviously - it's pretty corrosive.

yep carbie cleaners the go i used about 6 cans off the stuff when i striped my engine bay.

i had the engine rebuilt at my brotheres work (was blueprint automotive engineers if any of you perth people know of it)

the guys there painted my rocker cover green (to suit the car paint), it has toyota on the top so they sanded it back it looks mint.

If you have a metal rocker cover try that it will look sweet with a nice clean engine

nathan - try that c16 truck degreaser. that shit worx a treat - can get it at super cheap pretty cheap too - spray it on - let it sit for a bit then high pressure hose it off, followed by getting the old compressed air and cleaning up eletricals and loom and bits and pieces.

for the fiddly bits if you're keen use a toothbrush.

for the alloy bits i found that prepwash was pretty keen stuff to use to get rid of build up grease.
