Paint preparation help
Hey guys I have decided to devote the next three weeks of my holidays to sanding down the ke20 rolla. I know this will be a painful process, the car needs to go back through the current coat of 2-pac and 2-pac clear, to get through to the crap acrylic underneath that also needs to be removed (didn’t have a chance to harden), I looked at some past posts and some of my questions have been answered, Some of my questions are different so I made this post relating to my job. I don’t want to go down the paint stripper road as I have had some bad experiences with it entering joins and leading to moisture and rust. It has also burns the crap out of skin and is a shitter of a job.
What is the best way to get back to the original paint? I used 80D? sandpaper and it took me a fair while to get through to the surface I wanted in one isolated area. I will be here till Christmas at this rate! The main question is what type, brand of sandpaper to use? Or is there another tool I should look into? 3m disks etc. The sandpaper clogs too easily.
Another thing it is wrong to get bog wet right? because it absorbs the water and causes it to crack in the future. But once I have applied the primer it should be fine?
I talked to a paintshop and they told me the hassle and toxicity of 2pac application. Is it still pretty toxic when I am sanding it? Should I wear a mask?
Where would I get sandblasting or bead blasting done is S.A/ what price?
I know I have asked many questions and any advice is appreciated (I know this is a task many of you have encountered and probably went mad at some stages )

I would say ware a mask, even if some people tell you that it is safe. Remember they thought Asbestos was safe as well.

2pac. shite
no way i'll paint with that shit
i'm doing my celica in acrylic.
have EXCELLENT air flow in the are you are working in. and yes including when sanding. definately wear a mask - and get a bloody good one at that - not a cheap paper type $2 reject shop POS - get the real deal.
sandblasting, is ok but, again, wear a mask - also - you can get attachments to your air compressor but, its a filthy job, believe me, very effective tho.
paint stipper can be used to remove the old paint just make sure you thoroughly clean the panels after you've done.

Sorry grega, seem to be following you here
Sandbasting would cost more then its worth to do a whole car, ir puts ripples in the metal, might not look like it but after you put a few shinny coats of fresh paint, you'll notice it in the sunlight, do the engine bay tho by that, as not to mant ppl will worry about the paint and more dazzeled by the donk in there
Yes, get a good twin filter resperator, CIGWELD or something like that, thats what we use at work anyway.
Again, i spose it comes down to personal choice here, but if you take all the safety messures 2pak is fine, you can get less harmless stuff, cant remember what the stuff is thats in it which they take out, just as long as you wear ya mask at all times you'll be fine, but hey, gotta die of something dont we?
also, yes, keep the bog dry, as it will stay moist and could rust under neath, also it will prolly crack when it drys i think, but i know its not good to get it wet while its still raw/bare, once you have primer/undercoat on it, its fine
Just use the old paint stripper, nd like grega said, just wash all the car again even if you think u have it all off, get a pressure washer and wash it all, then leave in the sun for a few hours and blow dry with the compressor
also, make sure you dont rub down to the metal with that 80grit sand paper, its a real c*nt when ya scratch all the metal and gotta refill it, just more work for ya really
anyways, enough from me, good luck
see ya

Yeah cheers for that guys it was very helpful! Yeah I know 2-pac is a great paint, you just need the correct equipment to do the job. I can see its unhealthy to breath any paint or other paint related dust. The preparation will be in my backyard so I think it should be fine to sand it in the open air with a mask and goggles on (just for the sanding). Tell me if I’m wrong.
Cheers

Okay, I'm in pretty much the EXACT same boat as you at the moment, only I've been having a play over the last few months. For the same reasons as you I decided I didn't want to use paint stripper. I went to Bunnings and bought these 3M drill-mounted discs. They are like a big tough scourer, and was about to rip through all my old paint work. There was two coats on mine, some had a dodgy layer of spray putty...like half an inch thick!
These things are awesome, the black one will rip through the paint, and there is a red one which will almost bring the metal to a mirror shine.
Hope that helps
